Michael Lerner, founder of MCZ Development, has requested a new zoning designation to allow for the five-story building at 1737-1741 N. Western Ave., city records show . Introduced in July, the zoning request was referred to the city's committee on Zoning, Landmarks and Building Standards but no action has been taken. "It's still under review and we are working out some of the details on exactly how many units and how big they should be. It's still a work in progress," Paul Sajovec, chief of staff to 32nd Ward Ald. Scott Waguespack, said on Tuesday. Lerner is proposing to replace the vintage building at 1...

Major Development Planned for RiverHouse in Pentagon City

Nearly 1,100 new apartment units could be coming to Pentagon City as part of a major planned development of the 37- acre RiverHouse apartment complex . RiverHouse owner Vornado presented the initial development plans to largely skeptical members of the Arlington Ridge Civic Association last night. The plans call for 934 new market rate apartment units , to be added to the existing 1,670 units on the site across three buildings, which date back to the 1950s and 60s. Vornado is also proposing a 150 unit, stand-alone affordable apartment building , to be developed with a nonprofit affordable housing partner . The new market rate units will be built across three buildings, each about seven stories tall — half the height of the existing buildings — to preserve the views of condominium residents on Arlington Ridge . The first two buildings are to be built on what is currently a surface parking lot across from the Pentagon Row courtyard . Between the buildings will run a pedestrian co...

Dozens Displaced After Fire Rips Through Apartment Building « CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — A massive fire in Hagerstown has forced more than 70 people from their apartments Tuesday night . It started right after a thunderstorm rolled through. Residents say the fire started right after the building was hit by lightning, and they watched for 30 minutes while the fire department was unable to get enough water on the flames. “It was just horrific. I’ve never seen anything like it before,” said Shawn Lohr, who lives across from the complex. “We heard the lightning hit, but I thought it hit outside on the pavement, and then the next thing I know, the alarm went off,” said Roxie Vickers, who lives in the apartments. The State Fire Marshal ’s Office confirms the fire was caused by a lightning strike, and all residents of the apartment have been accounted for. It was just after 8 p.m., when the storms rolled through Hagerstown, and the Woodbridge North Apartments went up in flames. “In a matter of 15-20 minutes, it was the whole roof, gone,” one resident said. “...

Photo courtesy of Mountain Peak Marketing Apartment projects are going up across the Treasure Valley from Boise to Meridian to Nampa and to the next frontier in multi- family housing , Kuna. Some 2, 700 apartment units are in various stages of construction among those cities. Some are recently completed and some are being built in phases.  That is a stark contrast to the near zero multi- family construction in 2010 in metro Boise. Multi- family housing has evolved in the 21 st century, largely moving away from large buildings with hundreds of units. Locally, many developers have settled for the common denominator of sets of fourplexes with the occasional six-, eight- ...
