A fire broke out at a west Edmonton apartment complex Thursday morning in the Callingwood area, where crews arrived  to find some residents on their balconies. Edmonton Fire Rescue said 40 firefighters were called to the Westridge Estates B apartment complex at 7611-172 St. just after 8 a.m. and arrived on scene within five minutes.The fire began in a third floor suite and quickly spread. Flames could be seen shooting from the roof of the four- storey apartment building , which is owned by Boardwalk rentals.Third-floor- resident Kerry Upright said she woke up to fire alarms going off.“I heard screaming outside on the balcony,” she told Global News .“I went to the balcony and seen a guy almost jump off the balcony.” Story continues below She said she also saw smoke coming from his suite. Woman, 59, dies in apartment fire; victim identified

An apartment fire that claimed a woman’s life on Columbus’ north side started from discarded smoking materials or falling asleep while smoking in bed. The victim of the 2:47 p.m. Monday fire at the Canterbury House Apartments , west of Candlelight Village, has been identified as 59-year-old Deborah Volland. Volland, whose body was found in the hallway of her apartment at 3540 Nicholas Lane, likely died of smoke inhalation , Bartholomew County Coroner Clayton Nolting said. However, the cause and manner of death will not be finalized until the investigation, including toxicology, is complete, Nolting said. Columbus firefighters found her in the apartment and brought her outside before emergency medical technicians attempted resuscitation , Columbus Fire Investigator Matt Noblitt said. When firefighters arrived , they heard multiple smoke detectors had activated and were told by neighbors that the apartment’s sole occupant had limited mobility, Noblitt said. Cigarette Causes 3-Alarm Apartment Fire in Uptown Dallas: DFR

Dallas Fire-Rescue firefighters have contained a 3-alarm fire at an apartment building in Uptown Dallas. The fire started at about 11:30 Wednesday morning on the 3200 block of Hall Street. Crews said they could see smoke and fire coming from a third-floor balcony when they arrived. Once they extinguished the blaze, they found a dog inside the building. Paramedics attempted to save the dog with oxygen, but were unsuccessful and the dog died. No other injuries were reported. The fire caused damage to two different units, but at least 10 additional units sustained water and/or smoke damage. An unknown number of residents are displaced due to the damages. The American Red Cross was notified to assist them. Fire officials determined the fire was accidental. It was caused from an improperly discarded a cigarette. CNN reports that the plane -- an F/A-18D assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 106 -- slammed into the Mayfair Mews Apartment complex , setting several apartments on fire. The US Navy reported that both pilots ejected from the plane, but are being transported to the local hospital for observation. (CBS12) —  A man accused of setting fire to an apartment complex in Riviera Beach with children trapped inside , stabbed their mother in the head during a fight, minutes before flames ripped through the apartment, police said. The fire happened Friday night at the Stonybrook Apartment complex on Martin Luther King Jr . Boulevard in Riviera Beach. Authorities believe the fire began in the living room on two couches, likely from an accelerant. Video shared to CBS12 showed people breaking through the locked apartment door to rescue two young children trapped inside . Riviera Beach firefighters found the third child , a one-month-old girl, underneath a door. It may have saved her life, firefighters said Saturday. Detectives investigate shooting leaving man wounded in Sunrise

SUNRISE, Fla. - Sunrise detectives were investigating a Friday night shooting that left one man wounded.  Police officers responded to a two- story apartment building at 2119 NW 64 Ave., near the First Baptist Church.  Fire Rescue found a man with a gunshot wound on the ground and took him to Broward General Hospital . Man dies after apartment fire in Woodbridge

WOODBRIDGE, VA (WUSA9) - A man died after an apartment fire in Woodbridge, Virginia late Monday night , police said.  Around 11:35 p.m., officers responded to an apartment in the 3500 block of Sherbrooke Circle to assist the Department of Fire and Rescue with an apartment fire.  Upon searching the apartment, fire crews found an unconscious man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.  The victim will be transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office for further examination and identification. The identity of the deceased will be released once confirmed and next of kin is notified. More information will be released when available. The investigation continues.   © 2017 WUSA-TV

The only remains of the birth of "Baby Willow" were washed away from an apartment complex parking lot Tuesday morning as distraught neighbors looked on. A day earlier Orlando police responded around 3 p.m. to Willow Bend Apartments after someone reported seeing a possible placenta in the parking lot. Homicide and crime- scene investigators determined "that a full term baby had been born and discarded," police said. Officers found the mother, 30-year-old Susan Richardson, on Monday but no baby. She only admitted to giving birth to the girl, according to police. Richardson was taken to the Orange County Jail on an aggravated child neglect charge Tuesday afternoon , police say. Suspected Drunk Driver From Temecula Crashes Into Apartment Complex

MURRIETA, CA — A Temecula woman was arrested Tuesday night for suspicion of driving under the influence after reportedly plowing into a Murrieta apartment complex and creating havoc for the building's residents, according to police. The Murrieta Police Department was called at 8:49 p.m. to the report of a vehicle that crashed into the housing unit near Murrieta Hot Springs Road and Calle Del Lago . Responding officers, along with crews from Murrieta Fire and Rescue, found the woman trapped inside her white, four-door vehicle that was three feet off the ground and wedged into the corner of the building, police said. The driver, Nichole Winters, 41 of Temecula, was extricated from the sedan and determined by officers to be under the influence of alcohol, the agency said. Winters was transported to a local hospital for minor injuries and booked into the Cois Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta for suspicion of driving under the influence.
