Jeff Malachowski Daily News Staff @JMalachowskiMW MARLBOROUGH – Firefighters quickly put out a blaze inside an unoccupied residence at the Royal Crest apartments Tuesday afternoon , mostly limiting the damage to that one apartment, said Fire Chief Kevin Breen . A resident of the apartment complex called 911 after seeing smoke emanating from a third-floor balcony of one of the residential buildings at the facility around 12:45 p.m., said Breen. Fire crews arrived moments later and encountered heavy smoke and fire. Firefighters immediately began an aggressive outside attack on the blaze and were able to quickly put it out, said Breen. The apartment was empty, which aided crews in containing the fire to the apartment. Breen said if there had been furniture and other materials in the apartment, the fire could have spread and the damage could have been much worse. “The fire was just ready to break from the area of origin,” said Breen. “We were very fortunate.” The apartment ...

SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. (WMTV) - The Sun Prairie Fire Department was called to an apartment fire located in the 600 block of Schiller Street on Monday around 4 a.m. According to the Sun Prairie Fire Department , firefighters arrived to a 16 unit apartment building with a lot of smoke showing. They found an active fire and began to put it out immediately. All the residents had evacuated when they arrived and residents from 14 of the 16 units are displaced due to this fire and the American Red Cross and Sun Prairie School District are providing support. A spectacular fire, possibly ignited by lightning, caused heavy damage Tuesday night to an apartment house in Maryland, according to the state fire marshal ’s office. The fire broke out in the Hagerstown area of western Maryland about 70 miles northwest of the District of Columbia. No injuries or deaths were reported immediately. The three-story building had 37 apartments, and 74 occupants, the fire marshal’s office said. The fire began on the roof, according to the fire marshal’s office. It said witnesses “described a potential lightning strike before the fire.” A resident of the building told the Hagerstown Daily Mail that he thought lightning was responsible for the blaze. When the lightning struck, Travis Nagle told the Hagerstown newspaper, “The whole building shook.” Investigators are trying to confirm a cause, the fire marshal’s office said.
