GLENVILLE — Residents' ideas to improve the look and safety of Freeman's Bridge Road range from constructing a roundabout at its intersection with Route 50 to finding a way to remove the railroad crossing that splits the corridor in half. "You really need more lanes; you need sidewalks," said Jim Mastroianni, who owns the Glenville Sportsplex just south of the railroad crossing, during a planning workshop Wednesday at the Glenville Senior Center . Mastroianni has operated at the Freeman's Bridge Road location for nearly 25 years. "It's a lot busier than it was. A lot needs to change," he said. Mastroianni was among about 50 people who turned out for the workshop, which was part of the town's $50, 000 Complete Streets study of what can be done to improve the corridor. A focus is being placed on making the road more bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly. At its Monday meeting, the Alexandria City Council set a public hearing for Oct. 9 to consider the request. Unique Development LLC is proposing to eventually build four 15,000-square-foot buildings on McKay Avenue, between Sixth and Seventh avenues. Each building would house six three-bedroom units, five four-bedrooms and one five-bedroom. The TIF that's being requested is only for the first phase of the project. The total cost of all four phases would amount to $6 million. The apartments would be available for households with incomes that are 60 percent or less than Douglas County's median income. Also, restrictions will be placed on the rents so they won't exceed those allowed by the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency , according to Nicole Fernholz, director of the Alexandria Area Economic Development Commission . Thousands of students will be returning to UConn campuses over the coming few days, including about 12,400 moving into Storrs residence halls and about 260 who will be the first occupants of UConn Stamford ’s new student housing. Early arrivals for the 2017- 18 academic year began last weekend at Storrs. Freshmen start moving in to residence halls at 7 a.m. Friday, followed by upperclassmen and transfer students over the weekend. Overall, about 23,000 undergraduate students will start classes Monday at Storrs and the regional campuses. Many thousands of additional students are also enrolled at other locations in UConn’s schools of law, medicine, and dental medicine.
