It is known that Sutton ran a clipper ship line to the California coast in the 1850's that served Gold Rush hopefuls , and that he lived on West 29th Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues (a block that was also called Lamartine Place and was set apart from the rest of the city's street grid because of separate numbering). In 1875 a consortium of developers that included James Stokes , William Dodge and D. Willis James began to acquire property on Avenue A in the East 50's, on what is now called Sutton Place . Deed patterns suggest that they were working with a builder, Andrew Kerwin, who in 1879 put up the original Sutton Place enclave , 24 single-family brownstones on the block bounded by 58th and 59th Streets and Avenue A and the East River. He bought a quite traditional penthouse at 210 East 73rd Street ; a perfectly lovely apartment that just needed a bit of a décor makeover. Posen previously resided in Soho, but we were unaware he also owned an apartment in the rather stuffy neighborhood of Sutton Place. The  Project Runway  judge did, however, purchase a two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment at 345 East 57th Street in 2013 for $925,000, and now it looks like he’s sold the co-op for a profit. Fashion designer and Project Runway judge Zac Posen — known for dressing celebs from Michelle Obama to Rihanna and Gwyneth Paltrow — has sold his Sutton Place apartment at 345 E. 57th St. for $1.15 million, according to city property records . The news was first reported by the Observer. He bought the two-bedroom, two-bathroom unit for $925,000 in 2013. This recent transaction appears to have taken place off-market. The apartment comes with high ceilings, hardwood floors, lots of built-ins and a decorative fireplace. The buyer is identified in records as Karen Strauss. Posen now lives in an Upper East Side penthouse pad that he bought for $3.5 million at 210 E. 73rd St. earlier this year. That “classic six” duplex, with a terrace, is in an Emery Roth-designed building. The unit was originally asking $4.89 million and was last priced at $3.99 million. Share this:
