In 2008, Hurricane Ike made landfall in the United States, killing 112 people and causing about $37.5 billion in damages. The storm destroyed the Louisiana coastline and caused flooding along the Mississippi River.  Ike also caused trouble in the state of Texas, forcing people to evacuate and move out, never to return. Among them was Erika Negrete, 31, who managed to escape along with her family.  She came to California and has been thankful to be able to stay with her in-laws in Fontana ever since.  However, Negrete, her husband, and three children were frustrated because of a lack of privacy. A racist flyer that made waves on social media today after a resident of an Irvine, Ca. apartment building found it hanging in an elevator is fraudulent, according to a spokesman for property company Equity Residential . “This flyer is a fake. It wasn’t produced by us. It wasn’t posted by us. I don’t know where it came from,” Equity representative Marty McKenna said over the phone this morning. The flyer—a notice about noise complaints in Irvine’s Toscana apartment complex—included a bolded section directed specifically at African-American residents. It read: We also would like to remind our African-American residents to keep conversation volume down and reduce music levels between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. Multiple complaints have been made regarding this issue. The mood was tense, the hour was late and the conflict had a familiar ring to it. Ansca Homes is seeking permission to build 206 apartments on Hypoluxo Road, and the neighbors were not happy. “There are two sets of property rights here, the existing communities and the people who want to build,” Palm Beach County Commissioner Shelly Vana said. “I hope the answer is something everybody can live with.” Vana reminded the homeowners that workforce housing , which accounts for 142 of the 206 apartments, is a mandatory program heavily supported by the Palm Beach County Commission . AMLI completed the 300- unit rental development at 11000 Miramar Boulevard in 2015. Units range from 840 square feet to nearly 1,500 square feet, according to its website.
