Major project still planned for Monticello Avenue in Norfolk | Real Estate

Image
NORFOLK Plans for the new five- story complex north of downtown, featuring shops and more than 200 apartments, were approved three years ago. Last year, the former headquarters of Hampton Roads Transit was demolished to make way. But the 2- acre lot remains nothing but a fenced-off patch of dirt. And a few weeks ago, for-sale signs went up near the fences where renderings used to hang. The developer behind the proposed $42 million complex at 1500 Monticello Ave., next door to Chick-fil-A, said the project isn’t dead – merely delayed by financing problems. “We think it’s still a great site and a great opportunity to do something there,” said Michael Haller, the executive vice president of Fairfax- based developer Concord Eastridge . “We love what’s going on with Norfolk. ... We’d love to be a part of it.” By the end of the year, he said, the company hopes to either partner with new investors or find a purchaser to step in and build the “shovel-ready” project. The pr...

Swing vote could decide future of Crestwood Ridge Apartments

Cedar Rapids residents continue fight against affordable housing project as City Council prepares to make decision May 18, 2017 at 5:40 pm | Print View CEDAR RAPIDS — Neighbors to a proposed affordable housing complex in the northwest quadrant say they are frustrated with unresponsive elected officials as the project that months ago appeared dead now appears primed to pass. CommonBond Communities, a St. Paul, Minnesota- based nonprofit affordable housing developer , wants to build the $9 million, 45- unit Crestwood Ridge Apartments at 1200 Edgewood Road NW . Neighbors have fought back but been painted as biased, city leaders won ’t give them a fair chance and an east-west divide is fueling opinions, said Boyd Severson, 65, who has been part of a core group of opposition. “People are aligning as east side versus west side , at least that is the appearance,” said Severson, who is among 769 people who have signed a petition against rezoning to allow the development. “People say our...

August 26, 2017 Chip and Joanna love fixing up houses, and even offer a popular rental house | HGTV.com You may not be a celebrity, but you can live like one. The rich and famous love selling (and renting) luxury real estate almost as much as they like buying it. Provided you have the money, you can move into a home where the glitterati once slept. You might even be able to score a relative bargain in the process. Celebrities sometimes have trouble unloading their over-the-top homes, research by Redfin has found. Transforming a suburban crossroads | Newsday

Change is coming to Hicksville. It may not come easily. It will take time, and the right combination of local leadership, private investment, community engagement, innovative thinking and, perhaps most important, a new Oyster Bay way. Most Popular But it is coming. The pieces of the puzzle that hopefully will bring new energy to downtown Hicksville have been slowly falling into place: the $ 121 million upgrade of the Long Island Rail Road ’s busiest station; renovations of the Hicksville athletic center and the once vibrant Broadway Mall ; and the repaving, cleanup and drain repair of Routes 106 and 107. And the recent approval of the third track expansion project will mean vastly improved LIRR service and the potential to lure workers to Hicksville businesses. Now, town and state officials are starting to fill in critical missing pieces that could turn this tired crossroads into a major hub with housing for younger adults starting out and older ones wanting to downsize, entert...

Twin Oaks Residents and NoDa Neighbors Organize Against Displacement | News Feature

Image
Late on a humid Sunday afternoon , July 30, at Twin Oaks apartments on East 36th Street , about a dozen residents mingle under a large oak tree . Some sit on stoops, others pace. Some sit quietly, others discuss the conundrum they've found themselves in through no fault of their own. "I just don't know what I'm supposed to do," one woman stammers between sobs. The residents are young, old and in between. Some have lived here for nearly a decade, some moved in this year. One thing all of the neighbors share in common: they don't know where they'll be living on September 17. Each resident living in the 18 remaining units in the complex — two other units were heavily damaged by fire in February — received a letter on July 13 stating the company they were leasing from, Beatty Investment Homes LLC (BIH), had sold the property and would be knocking it down. Local development firm The Drakeford Company (TDC) and builders Shea Homes plan to build more than 30...
