Fire damages unoccupied Royal Crest apartment in Marlborough - News - MetroWest Daily News, Framingham, MA

Jeff Malachowski Daily News Staff @JMalachowskiMW MARLBOROUGH – Firefighters quickly put out a blaze inside an unoccupied residence at the Royal Crest apartments Tuesday afternoon , mostly limiting the damage to that one apartment, said Fire Chief Kevin Breen . A resident of the apartment complex called 911 after seeing smoke emanating from a third-floor balcony of one of the residential buildings at the facility around 12:45 p.m., said Breen. Fire crews arrived moments later and encountered heavy smoke and fire. Firefighters immediately began an aggressive outside attack on the blaze and were able to quickly put it out, said Breen. The apartment was empty, which aided crews in containing the fire to the apartment. Breen said if there had been furniture and other materials in the apartment, the fire could have spread and the damage could have been much worse. “The fire was just ready to break from the area of origin,” said Breen. “We were very fortunate.” The apartment ...

Police take search efforts underground, still no sign of Baby Willow

ORLANDO, Fla. — After three days, Orlando police have yet to find any sign of Baby Willow. Investigators, along with city of Orlando crews searched sewer lines for any sign of the missing infant on Wednesday. Those searches and the reexamination of dumpsters from the Willow Bend Apartment Complex failed to yield any evidence, police said. Mother of abandoned newborn girl charged with child neglect

The only remains of the birth of "Baby Willow" were washed away from an apartment complex parking lot Tuesday morning as distraught neighbors looked on. A day earlier Orlando police responded around 3 p.m. to Willow Bend Apartments after someone reported seeing a possible placenta in the parking lot. Homicide and crime- scene investigators determined "that a full term baby had been born and discarded," police said. Officers found the mother, 30-year-old Susan Richardson, on Monday but no baby. She only admitted to giving birth to the girl, according to police. Richardson was taken to the Orange County Jail on an aggravated child neglect charge Tuesday afternoon , police say. Explosion, fire at South Pasadena apartment complex injures 1

SOUTH PASADENA >> A woman suffered serious injuries after an explosion and fire at an apartment complex Tuesday morning . Authorities said the fire displaced residents from six apartments. Mark Dondaville,division chief for the San Marino and South Pasadena fire departments , estimated damages at $200,000. Vigil To Mark 1-Year Anniversary Of Flower Branch Apartments Explosion

SILVER SPRING, MD — Thursday is the one-year anniversary of the devastating explosion at the Flower Branch Apartments that killed seven residents, two of whom were children, and displaced about 100 people. A vigil will be held to remember the victims Thursday evening . The Aug. 10, 2016 blast was caused by a natural gas leak . A total of 28 apartment units were destroyed, and 50 families were displaced by the disaster. Dozens of residents were injured at the scene, some from burns and others from broken bones as they jumped from the third and fourth floors of the buildings. The vigil will be held by the nonprofit CASA from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday in the parking lot across the street of 8658 Piney Branch Rd. The vigil will honor those lost and the families of the victims will be invited to speak. Police investigate shooting involving teen couple in Midwest City

MIDWEST CITY - Midwest City police said a shooting happened around 11:23 a.m. at the Meadowood Village apartment complex . Police said a 16-year-old and an 18-year-old were fighting in the parking lot but it escalated when the 16-year-old picked up a gun and shot the 18-year-old. “We received a call of a shooting at 6447 East Reno at the Meadowood apartments . When we arrived, we found a 16-year-old male and an 18-year-old female, who was the victim," said Chief Brandon Clabes . Midwest City police are now going door-to-door and combing through the neighborhood to try to determine why the teenager allegedly shot his girlfriend. “Apparently, the 16-year-old male was dating the female,” Clabes said. Woman dies after getting shot by Hayward police at Summerwood apartment complex

HAYWARD, Calif. -- A Hayward police officer shot a woman Tuesday night and she later died from her injuries. It happened on Foothill Boulevard and Grove Way at the Summerwood apartments . The Hayward police were called by another police agency to conduct a welfare check on a woman around 7 p.m. According to the Hayward police , the 62-year-old woman had made several 911 calls before they arrived. They went to the woman's second story apartment , spoke with her at her apartment and displayed a handgun in a threatening manner. The police say that's when officers retreated to the parking lot of the complex, while telling the woman to drop the weapon. They say she advanced towards officers and that's when one officer fired his weapon. A College Station man was arrested Monday night after police say he threatened his neighbor with a machete. According to College Station police , a man called 911 around 8:30 p.m. Monday and said someone was attacking his stepfather with a machete. Police responded to an apartment complex in the 2700 block of Longmire Drive and spoke with Larry Darnell Moody , 66, and another man. The man said he had arrived home from shopping and saw his wife outside arguing with Moody, who is the couple's neighbor. The woman said Moody had offered the couple's children cigarettes, and the victim said he told Moody that if he caught him trying to give the children tobacco, there would be "a problem." According to a police report, Moody then picked up a machete and raised it in the air. The report states Moody told officers he was defending himself. No injuries were reported. SOUTH BURLINGTON , Vt. — Kelly Cooney, 35, was all smiles Tuesday as she walked out of Vermont Superior Court . She and her boyfriend, Justin Perkins, 33, pleaded not guilty to animal cruelty charges at their arraignments. (CBS12) —  A newly released report shed light on the circumstances surrounding the apartment fire that nearly claimed the lives of three children. The report says Trenice Smith, the mother of the children, ran out of the apartment half naked after 22-year-old Velmando Williams, the father of her two sons, stabbed her in the back of the head with a knife during an argument. Latoya Rentz remembers the moment Smith noticed her three small kids were trapped inside a burning apartment . “When I looked at the window and they started getting black and stuff I'm like, 'Oh my God,'” Rentz said. “The girl Trenice was saying the kids were locked in."
