Residents have begun moving into the River House, a two- building apartment complex at 1785 N. Water St. consisting of 243 units. Developed by Atlanta- based Atlantic Realty Partners , the project marks the first entry into the city for the firm founded by two brothers originally from Whitefish Bay. The company, which has developed approximately 8,000 rental units across the country, has a handful of other developments in the Milwaukee area , including a cluster of buildings on W. A 15-year-old boy and his father are being credited by neighbors for spotting a fire on the roof of their Merrillville apartment building Monday , a day when they were warned there would be fire alarm testing . Tonda Hayes was taking a shower after 9 a.m. Monday when her son, Marcus, 15, told her the fire alarms were going off and they needed to leave their apartment, G Building at Summerwood Apartments/The Lakes at 8201. Tonda said she told her son not to be paranoid because the complex had posted letters saying it would be conducting tests of the fire alarm system between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday. In January 2015, a massive fire in Edgewater, N.J., demonstrated that buildings with sprinkler systems are not always protected against fire. The blaze destroyed 240 residential apartments and displaced 500 people from the Edgewater Avalon apartment building . The fire began when a maintenance worker’s plumbing torch accidentally ignited wooden wall studs , and flames quickly spread throughout the structure. Fifteen minutes passed before workers called the fire department . In that time, the fire spread throughout combustible void spaces (between walls and floors) and soon engulfed the building. Emergency personnel from 35 different cities and towns ultimately responded to the incident. Thankfully, there were no fatalities. About 100 people were ordered out of two squalid Temple Hills condominium buildings Tuesday , but a group of defiant residents said they are not leaving because they have nowhere to go. Fire officials warned the manager, owners and tenants of Lynnhill Condominiums last week about multiple fire-code violations, including towering piles of garbage in trash chutes and trash storage rooms , inoperable fire doors and a broken alarm system . Last week the Columbia Falls City Council approved the development of a new 18- unit apartment complex in downtown. The council gave the green light to Mick Ruis’ proposal, which is emerging as his latest local investment . The apartment complex , valued at an estimated $3 million, will replace the former DaVall Building at the corner of Fifth Street West and First Avenue West. Ruis, a prominent local developer and philanthropist, purchased the empty building two years ago and is replacing it with a three- story apartment complex . According to plans submitted to the city, the 22,000-square-foot complex will feature 12 two-bedroom units and six three-bedroom units. NORFOLK The housing market may be struggling, but apartment construction in Norfolk continues to boom. The City Council is expected to approve a rezoning today that will allow a 180-unit, $20. 7 million upscale apartment development called the Meadowood Apartments to be constructed off North Military Highway . It would be the seventh apartment complex that opened, received city approval or on which construction began in the past year. Moreover, two other apartment complexes have been proposed. Meadowood would be built on 7.7 acres currently zoned for industrial use on International Boulevard adjacent to a Kmart and the Park Crescent Apartments . Rents would top out at $1,450, said Taylor Franklin, vice president of multi family development for S.L. Nusbaum Realty . It would be a gated community, Franklin said. In 2008, Hurricane Ike made landfall in the United States, killing 112 people and causing about $37.5 billion in damages. The storm destroyed the Louisiana coastline and caused flooding along the Mississippi River.  Ike also caused trouble in the state of Texas, forcing people to evacuate and move out, never to return. Among them was Erika Negrete, 31, who managed to escape along with her family.  She came to California and has been thankful to be able to stay with her in-laws in Fontana ever since.  However, Negrete, her husband, and three children were frustrated because of a lack of privacy. Lebanon— The apartment complex to be built behind the Element hotel on Route 120 in Lebanon moved has moved a step closer to reality as the developer has filed his plans and sought permission from the city to begin construction. Manchester developer Dick Anagnost filed a permit application with the Lebanon’s city planning department to begin construction on a $4 million, three- story apartment building . He hopes to be able to break ground on the project this fall and have it ready for occupancy next summer, according to Anagnost. The apartment building is the first in a planned 153- unit residential complex in Altaria Lebanon Park , a mixed commercial and residential development spanning 65 acres of which the 4-year-old Element hotel was the first phase. A fire broke out at a west Edmonton apartment complex Thursday morning in the Callingwood area, where crews arrived  to find some residents on their balconies. Edmonton Fire Rescue said 40 firefighters were called to the Westridge Estates B apartment complex at 7611-172 St. just after 8 a.m. and arrived on scene within five minutes.The fire began in a third floor suite and quickly spread.
