Hidden megamansion to be built in Manhattan's UES

Image
Two townhouses in the Carnegie Hill area of Manhattan's Upper East Side are to be combined into a stunning megamansion, if plans approved by the Landmarks Preservation Commission on Tuesday go ahead. Matthew Harris, a partner at the investment fund Global Infrastructure Partners , bought up 53 and 55 East 92nd Street , just a block and a half from Central Park, with the intention of creating a stunning six- story super mansion . The front of the buildings, which were build around the turn of the century, will remain much the same, but the rear will be replaced with a massive glass facade , while the back yard will be turned into a sunken garden - a far cry from the traffic of nearby Madison and Park Avenues. But it's the inside that will see the real changes, dnainfo reported.  55 East 92nd Street (pictured) are a pair of ordinary townhouses" class="blkBorder img-share" /> Landmarks Preservation Commission on Tuesday go ahead, its rear (seen in mock-up...

Tour the model rentals at One Hudson Yards, the megaproject's latest lavish residence

Just a little over a week after leasing got underway at Hudson Yards’ über- pricey rental building , One Hudson Yards, 20 percent of the apartments here have already been leased. As the building prepares to welcome its first residents at the end of this month, Curbed had a chance to tour a couple of model apartments at the 33- story rental located at 530 West 30th Street , between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues. The tour kicked off in the lobby and was led by the interior designer on the project, Andre Kikoski; the lobby is very emblematic of all the sculptural elements present throughout the building (and the model units), and some of the pieces that really stand out here are the bespoke chandelier, which is comprised of 400 hand blown glass pieces ; and a 25-foot-long wall of cast bronze panels , which Kikoski described is created when “Molten bronze is poured over natural linen fabric ; as the loosely gathered linen vaporizes , the process imparts the toothy texture of the fabric in a...

Vagrants turn luxury building into homeless haven

Forget about borrowing a cup of sugar — can you spare a couple of bucks? Working- class Bronx families thought they had landed the dream of affordable rents at a spanking-new apartment complex — until busloads of rowdy homeless people moved in and turned the building into a living nightmare. “I feel like I’ve been scammed. They weren’t upfront to let us know what kind of building this was going to be,” said Omar Cooke, 38, who pays $962 for a one-bedroom apartment at 1802 Crotona Ave. in Crotona Park. Months after the tenants signed their leases, the developer moved homeless families into 44 of the building’s 55 units. Now the rent-paying residents say they’re plagued by fights, threats and panhandling, and they fear for the safety of themselves and their children. All visitors — including the regular tenants — have to be patted by security. And when the shelter staff leave the building between 6 p.m. Friday night and 8 a.m. Monday, all hell breaks loose , Cooke says. “On Friday wh...

Sons of Norway site slated for “premium” apartments

Image
A Ryan Companies partnership plans to build a mix of high-end apartments and retail at the Sons of Norway site at 1455 W. Lake St. Tony Barranco, Ryan Companies vice president of real estate development , told East Calhoun neighbors this week the project’s size is not yet finalized. A small amount of retail would stand near Lake Street, he said, perhaps a deli or café. Sons of Norway would remain on the block in the new development. The existing Sons of Norway building would likely be demolished and replaced, and Norwegian culture would be reflected on the site in some fashion. Barranco said density and height would diminish closer to residential areas at 31 st Street, a request that neighbors echoed . “My concern would be that this project transition well to the residential,” said resident Heather Wulfsberg . “…That can be really jarring.” Wulfsberg and several other residents said parking and traffic patterns are crucial to quality of life in the neighborhood. Parking would be pro...
