A 15-year-old boy and his father are being credited by neighbors for spotting a fire on the roof of their Merrillville apartment building Monday , a day when they were warned there would be fire alarm testing . Tonda Hayes was taking a shower after 9 a.m. Monday when her son, Marcus, 15, told her the fire alarms were going off and they needed to leave their apartment, G Building at Summerwood Apartments/The Lakes at 8201. Tonda said she told her son not to be paranoid because the complex had posted letters saying it would be conducting tests of the fire alarm system between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday. Marcus, however, was unconvinced, she said. He went outside, where he spotted the flames on the roof and came back to get her. "He told me 'We got to get out. The roof is on fire,'" she said. A neighbor at Canterbury House Apartments reported smelling smoke and then saw it coming from the apartment around 2:45 p.m. When Columbus firefighters arrived at in the 3500 block of Nicholas Lane they found 59-year-old Deborah Volland unconscious in the hallway of her apartment. As crews were extinguishing the fire, firefighters removed Volland from the apartment and attempted to resuscitate her. Those efforts proved unsuccessful , and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Volland likely died from smoke inhalation , according to the Bartholomew County Coroner Clayton Nolting , but the cause and manner of death won't be finalized until the investigation is complete. The only remains of the birth of "Baby Willow" were washed away from an apartment complex parking lot Tuesday morning as distraught neighbors looked on. A day earlier Orlando police responded around 3 p.m. to Willow Bend Apartments after someone reported seeing a possible placenta in the parking lot. Homicide and crime- scene investigators determined "that a full term baby had been born and discarded," police said. Officers found the mother, 30-year-old Susan Richardson, on Monday but no baby. She only admitted to giving birth to the girl, according to police. Richardson was taken to the Orange County Jail on an aggravated child neglect charge Tuesday afternoon , police say.
