Cities Are Guaranteeing Tenants Access To A Lawyer To Help Them Fight Eviction

Image
In 2013, Randy Dillard was living with his four sons and a daughter in an apartment at 198th Street and Bainbridge in the Bronx. The windows were broken; mold and mildew streaked the walls. In the winter, Dillard’s family had to boil water on the stove to bathe; there was no heat or hot water. When the New York City Housing Authority conducted an inspection of the apartment on behalf of Section 8, the federal rent assistance program that financed Dillard ’s rental, the unit failed the test, and Section 8 stopped paying Dillard ’s landlord, demanding that he make repairs. That winter, Dillard was hospitalized for two months with a bout of emphysema; when he came out, he was served with eviction papers for nonpayment of rent. advertisement “I stood in the middle of my hallway looking around my apartment thinking: What am I going to do with my stuff?” Dillard tells Fast Company . “I told myself: I’m going to end up homeless. I’m going to wind up in a shelter.” Dillard got word of a Bron...

More people are turning to Facebook Groups to find queer-friendly housing — here’s how you can, too

Image
It’s no great surprise that cities and neighborhoods that boast significant LGBTQ populations tend to be the ones with the most gentrification. And while that’s great for local economies , it also means that many of the same queer folk who help make vibrant neighborhoods such attractive places to live are left priced out when rents inevitably tick ever more skyward. Add to that the inherent historical challenges of finding queer- friendly housing , and securing a spot to rest your head can be an incredibly daunting task . While panning for queer- friendly housing gold can still yield success on sites like Craigslist, more people are turning to a bevy Facebook groups across the nation to link up with potential like-minded roommates. “Let’s keep our friends together in this beautiful city,” reads the tagline of Juanita’s List, a San Francisco group set up by local drag queen Juanita More. Another group — Gay Area Housing — also connects queer and queer- friendly house hunters ...

American Horror Story Cult Theory Connects Michigan, Trump & Clowns

Image
American Horror Story : Cult has our attention. The seventh season of Ryan Murphy's landmark horror anthology looks poised to deliver on the chaotic creeps of earlier installments, with what seems like a more arch and darkly comic tone . The trailer, which dropped this week, re-confirms what we already know: the season will focus on the 2016 presidential election, take place in Michigan, and center on a clown cult. Sarah Paulson plays a woman undone by Donald Trump's win, and whose clown phobia is pushed to extremes by what is either a very lucid delusion or a very real blue- haired Evan Peters . The Midwest setting is a new one for the show, and a clever play at election-themed drama. The results of the 2016 election were not officially called in Michigan until November 24, sixteen days after voting, with Trump winning  by the narrowest margin in the typically blue state 's history. The race was so close that Green Party candidate Jill Stein requested a recount, but...

UConn Students Move into Storrs, Stamford Residence Halls This Weekend

Image
Thousands of students will be returning to UConn campuses over the coming few days, including about 12,400 moving into Storrs residence halls and about 260 who will be the first occupants of UConn Stamford ’s new student housing. Early arrivals for the 2017- 18 academic year began last weekend at Storrs. Freshmen start moving in to residence halls at 7 a.m. Friday, followed by upperclassmen and transfer students over the weekend. Overall, about 23,000 undergraduate students will start classes Monday at Storrs and the regional campuses. Many thousands of additional students are also enrolled at other locations in UConn’s schools of law, medicine, and dental medicine. The logistics of this year’s move-in weekend on the Storrs campus are expected to be more challenging than usual due to road construction. (Peter Morenus/UConn File Photo) Logistics of the move-in weekend on the Storrs campus are expected to be more challenging than usual due to road construction, notably the closure ...

Construction Continues as Move-in Begins at UConn

The incoming freshman class at UConn begins a new adventure today as the newest class of Huskies moves in at the Storrs campus. The rest of the student body will be moving in over the next few days. In all, 12,400 students will be moving into the residence halls on the Storrs campus. One of the biggest challenges families will face while moving the students in is getting around construction to replace old pipes.  The Route 195 entrance into campus at North Eagleville Road is closed and there are one-way traffic patterns on part of that road.  UConn officials said the university scheduled as much of the work as possible during summer, but it was not possible to finish the work before the start of classes or to reopen the parts of North Eagleville Road that remain under construction.  More information on traffic restrictions and check-in areas is posted on UConn’s website.  UConn warns that drivers should not rely on GPS because it does not reflect the traffic patterns and detours....

UConn Move-In Weekend: Forget the GPS, Watch the Signs

STORRS, CT — Massive construction projects on the main University of Connecticut campus mean students returning to campus this week will be facing a move-in weekend like never before. Some students who arranged early move -in are already on campus, but the bulk of the 12,400 who live in Storrs residence halls will be descending on the campus beginning at 7 a.m. Friday. Freshmen are up first Friday, followed by upperclassmen and transfer students over the weekend. The biggest piece of advice for far from administrators for Friday has been to go old school while driving to the new school. That means plugging the dorm addresses into GPS units is essentially useless because of North Campus closures and traffic restrictions along North Eagleville Road from Route 195 and its side streets . Movers should also note that all traffic is one-way on Alumni Drive between Hillside Road and Hilltop Apartments this week. "The best thing to do is to watch the signs as you start to approach the ...

In A Beijing Ballroom, Jared Kushner's Family Pushes 'Investor Visa' To Wealthy Chinese

Image
Beijing:  The Kushner family came to the United States as refugees, worked hard and made it big - and if you invest in Kushner properties , so can you. That was the message delivered Saturday by White House senior adviser Jared Kushner 's sister Nicole Kushner Meyer to a ballroom full of wealthy Chinese investors in Beijing. Over several hours of slide shows and presentations, representatives from the Kushner family business urged Chinese citizens gathered at a Ritz-Carlton hotel to consider investing hundreds of thousands of dollars in a New Jersey luxury apartment complex that would help them secure what's known as an investor visa. The potential investors were advised to invest sooner rather than later in case visa rules change under the Trump administration."Invest early, and you will invest under the old rules," one speaker said. The tagline on a brochure for the event: "Invest $500,000 and immigrate to the United States." And the highlight of t...

Marvel’s Netflix show ‘The Defenders” – A Primer

Image
In a few short hours Netflix will launch the much anticipated Defenders series uniting the street-level heroes of Hell’s Kitchen. A Brief History of The Defenders in the Marvel Universe : The Defenders first appeared in the comic book Marvel Feature #1  (December 1971) and were created by Roy Thomas and Ross Andru What set the Defenders apart from other the super teams that came before was that they had no charter or by-laws, no permanent headquarters, no fixed roster, and little affection for each other. The first Defenders team was formed by Doctor Strange when Yardoth, a Yannian (an alien humanoid race ) scientist, threatened Earth with the Omegatron doomsday device . Dr. Strange persuaded a reluctant Hulk and Namor, who had both helped him defeat the extra-dimensional, demonic beings called the Undying Ones, to help him thwart Yandroth’s scheme.    After the defeat of Yandroth, Hulk and Namor vowed never to work together again, but Strange managed to hold this informal allianc...
