Homeowners oppose Toscana Isles workforce apartments planned...

The mood was tense, the hour was late and the conflict had a familiar ring to it. Ansca Homes is seeking permission to build 206 apartments on Hypoluxo Road, and the neighbors were not happy. “There are two sets of property rights here, the existing communities and the people who want to build,” Palm Beach County Commissioner Shelly Vana said. “I hope the answer is something everybody can live with.” Vana reminded the homeowners that workforce housing , which accounts for 142 of the 206 apartments, is a mandatory program heavily supported by the Palm Beach County Commission . It was declared to be at a crisis level in 2005. Vana added that it would behoove the developer to make any concessions it could, even though some had already been made. At the Wednesday night meeting west of Boynton Beach, a dozen homeowners representing six nearby communities called the planned apartment complex “an eyesore” and “a Pandora’s box.” Homeowners mainly objected to the rental units, which they...

Developer seeks to build affordable apartments on Bayshore Drive

CLOSE Collier County will consider four public sites in East Naples and North Naples to encourage the development of affordable housing. Greg Stanley/Naples Daily News Credit: Andy Dean Photography via iStock (Photo: Andy Dean Photography via iStock) A developer wants to put up an apartment complex on Bayshore Drive and rent out nearly half of its units as affordable housing. The property, a vacant lot at the northeast corner of Bayshore and Thomasson drives, has been slated for affordable housing since 2005. But it has always been the county's plan for the East Naples site that the housing on it — either condominiums or single family homes — would be owned and not rented. In a 2005 agreement with the owners of the property, called the Cirrus Pointe Planned Unit Development , the county gave developers permission to build more units than is typically allowed in exchange for keeping 44 of those condos or homes affordable. The Grownups: John Altschul, the Elder Statesman of West Hollywood, Knows How to Reach Consensus

Image
John Altschul with his dog, Ethanol. (Photo by James Mills) EDITOR’S NOTE: The is another in a series of occasional stories titled “The Grownups” about West Hollywood residents 75 years old or older who are active in civic life. He’s been called the elder statesman of West Hollywood . He possesses the leadership, diplomacy, patience, charm and institutional memory necessary to hold that honorary title. More importantly, he has the ear of city leaders, community activists , business leaders and developers that is required of an effective statesman. Although he was not involved with the formation of the city, he became a guiding force in shaping West Hollywood . And this week, John Altschul celebrates his 81st birthday. He reluctantly accepts the idea of being the city’s elder statesman, but would prefer he wasn’t quite so much on the elder side of it (wouldn’t we all!). “ West Hollywood has always been a place where everyone has been so friendly,” says Altschul. “I’ve always felt ...

Board in favor of Logan Square apartment initiative

Pharos-Tribune (Logansport, IN) Aug. 24--A Logansport commission is planning to support a housing project in a downtown building with $160,000 and a five- year tax abatement . Bill Cuppy, executive director of the Cass- Logansport Economic Development Organization and Logansport- Cass County Chamber of Commerce, discussed the project at a Logansport Redevelopment Commission meeting on Wednesday. The project involves the Logan Square Building at Third Street and East Broadway. The vacant five- story building consists of about 45, 000 square feet and has a parking lot with about 75 spaces. Cuppy's presentation indicated Lafayette- based FRG Management is pursuing the project. The company bought the building in June and is willing to invest $3.2 million, Cuppy said. FRG Management wants to make the building's first floor mixed-use commercial, Cuppy continued, adding the firm is in talks to provide office space to a financial adviser and an attorney. Cuppy added the firs...
