A two-alarm fire at the Silverbrook Apartments on the 13000 block of Emily Road has displaced 13 residents and damaged at least four apartments. Dallas Fire and Rescue responded to the fire at 2 p.m. Monday, when they noticed smoke and flames rising from a first-story apartment in the two-story building. Five residents of that apartment were not home, and eight people who were in the apartment above safely exited when they noticed smoke, firefighters said. No one was injured in the blaze, but 8 adults and 5 children have been displaced. Firefighters said they had notified the American Red Cross on their behalf. The cause of the fire is unknown.

In January 2015, a massive fire in Edgewater, N.J., demonstrated that buildings with sprinkler systems are not always protected against fire. The blaze destroyed 240 residential apartments and displaced 500 people from the Edgewater Avalon apartment building . The fire began when a maintenance worker’s plumbing torch accidentally ignited wooden wall studs , and flames quickly spread throughout the structure. Fifteen minutes passed before workers called the fire department . In that time, the fire spread throughout combustible void spaces (between walls and floors) and soon engulfed the building. Emergency personnel from 35 different cities and towns ultimately responded to the incident. Thankfully, there were no fatalities. The fire broke out at about 9:30 p.m., Aug. 13, inside the apartment at Abbey Villas Apartments , 308 Van Buran St ., said Jackson firefighter Joe Smith . Firefighters were able to control and isolate the blaze to the single unit, sparing 40 adjacent units , Smith said. Two dogs and two cats were killed and two residents were displaced in the blaze, which rendered the apartment uninhabitable , Smith said. There were no injures reported. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Ruth Bennett woke up at 1 a.m. and looked through the doorway of her independent living apartment in Walker, about 20 miles west of Baton Rouge. It was Aug. 13, 2016, and rain had been pouring down for two days. Bennett was worried about her car flooding. She saw water creeping up to the parking lot, but her  car looked safe . She crawled back into bed.  Two hours later, one of the employees of Southern Pines Retirement Community  was pounding on Bennett's door. Not only had Bennett's car flooded, the facility was surrounded by water. The employee told Bennet to grab what she needed, including her medicine.
