If R.A. Long were to step inside the Monticello Hotel today , he would find it looking much like it did when he was busy founding the city of Longview in 1923. The historic hotel , the first major building to rise in the new town, is nearing the end of a multimillion- dollar renovation . It is packed with turn-of-the-century antiques and old paintings. The ceiling plasterwork of its Crystal Ballroom, long covered by a drop ceiling, is fully restored, and the arched ceiling is again flanked by plaster columns. Mr. Long would find plenty of new features, too: a red-hued “speakeasy” with burgundy wood bar , crystal chandeliers, a stage for performers and dozens of newly-renovated apartments in the second and third floors. Occupancy rates were up 0.3% to 77.4%. The average daily rate reached $132.21, an increase of 1.2% over the same week last year. And revenue per available room was up 1.5% to $102.39. Believe me, none of us ever plan to move now. Why would we? Pace Burt, the project’s developer, said the multimillion-dollar project will preserve the character and architectural integrity of the 102-year-old schoolhouse at 600 Magnolia St. while repurposing it for stylish apartments. “The project is going to be a historical renovation, so we will bring the building back to its original grandeur.
