Renter's insurance can be a godsend | Our Opinion

The fire that caused severe damage to a section of Greenhaven Apartments on Thursday was a tragedy. Thankfully, no one was killed or seriously injured in the early morning blaze that has been ruled accidental, but the fire resulted in a lot of people who lost most of their belongings and one tenant lost her beloved dog. Some people residing in the apartments only made it out with the clothes on their backs. It’s a sad situation when events like this occur. People’s lives are turned upside down over the loss of their belongings, finding accommodations until they can find a place to live, acquiring new household goods, losing rent and bill money that may have been inside the apartments and array of other issues that come when a disaster like this occurs. The building has been ruled to be uninhabitable, so those residents obviously will not be residing there anytime soon.  Hopefully, the majority of the tenants who lived in the apartment building have now found permanent places to liv...

Police justified using deadly force in Montgomery shooting

When members of the Town of Montgomery police department responded to a domestic call in the early morning hours of May 16, the situation turned into a standoff, with the suspect, Anthony Bostick, refusing to come out of his apartment on Abbey Avenue. After hours of negotiations and suicidal comments by Bostick, officers went inside the home. That's when police say Bostick fired at the officers, hitting police chief Arnold Amthor in the shoulder. Officers returned fire , but Bostick wasn't injured; instead, authorities say he shot himself in the bathroom. After the incident, Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler held a news conference, revealing the body camera footage from when officers went inside the apartment. On Monday, Hoovler announced the grand jury declined to file charges against the officer who fired shots at Bostick. He says he personally handled this case to determine if police used deadly physical force against an unarmed person. "The images fr...

25-year-old Mikequen Whitsett was arrested Friday morning after he allegedly fired blindly into two occupied apartments neighboring his own because he thought someone was 'after him.' ( Tuscaloosa County Jail )   A Northport man was arrested early Friday morning after allegedly firing blindly through the walls of his apartment and sending bullets into neighboring residences.  Lt. Kip Hart, the assistant commander of the Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide Unit , said investigators were called to the Saddlewood Apartments on Deerfield Lane in Northport around 3 o' clock Friday morning when residents there reported their homes had been shot into.  Hart said officers found two apartments bullets had ripped into, both of which were occupied. Son Of Sam: This Summer In 1977, An NYC Serial Killer Is Taken Down By A Parking Ticket

Image
NEW YORK, NY — In the summer of 1977, New York City was — literally and figuratively — on fire. It was the summer of disco fever, of Studio 54. It was the summer of Yankees mania. It was the summer that catapulted Ed Koch to City Hall. And in mid-July, it turned into the summer of darkness, when an epic, five-borough power outage — deemed an "act of God" by Con Ed — plunged the city into two days of total blackout. Airports shut down. News stations went off the air. Thousands were stuck in underground subway tunnels . Meanwhile, in the streets, the down-and-out — at their breaking point after years of municipal layoffs and a steady surge in violent crime — rioted and looted with abandon. Arsonists reportedly set more than 1,000 fires across the city in a single day. The Bronx, it would later be said, was burning. It was also the Summer of Sam. Want more local news? KENNEWICK, Wash.-- Gun fire rang out early Sunday morning on the 1100 block of West 10th Avenue at the Heatherstone Apartments in Kennewick. Police say a man was shot in the leg, but the injury was not life threatening. People that live in the building told KNDU  they heard two gun shots around 12:30am Sunday morning. They looked out their window where they say they saw multiple police cars arrive looking for the shooter. The man we spoke with says he wants to remain anonymous for his safety. "There was silence afterwards and then we heard the sirens. And then the police. The surreal thing was them approaching the house saying is the shooter inside." Kennewick police say the shooting was possibly gang related and the investigation is ongoing.

In the ’90s, We Had ‘Friends.’ Now They Call It Co-Living.

Image
More prosaically, co-living can simply mean roommates and common rooms, like a dorm. For some developers, it’s a form of adaptive reuse: many co-living sites, like WeLive at 110 Wall Street , are leased, in this case from the landlord of what once was an office building, drained of its tenants by Hurricane Sandy. Slide Show Adventures in Co-Living Credit Photographs by Andrew White for The New York Times There are still co-living evangelists, like Brad Hargreaves of Common, who has promised that “the genuine and organic relationships our members build with each other,” as he wrote in a post for Medium, would not be tainted by allowing journalists to sleep over at Common properties (though they were welcome to tour). With over $23 million in financing, Common now operates in five cities, including out of eight houses in New York City. Some co-living ventures have collapsed under the weight of their ideals, like the utopian Pure House , started by Ryan Fix, now 42, in his Williamsburg l...
