Fire forces evacuation of Orchard Park apartments

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WKBW) - Fire crews battled a blaze at the Green Lake Apartments in Orchard Park on Monday that forced residents out into the cold. Smoke coming from the apartments on North Lake Drive could be seen for miles. The fire chief says the blaze appears to have started in an attached first-floor garage before spreading up through the building and collapsing the roof. The three-story building is a total loss. No one was hurt. Orchard Park Police were able to alert residents to the fire and evacuate those who were home in the nine- unit apartment building . Some pets perished in the blaze. Several fire companies , including East Aurora and Hamburg, were called in to help fight the fire. There was only one hydrant in front of the apartments and crews had to run multiple lines from South Buffalo Street to bring water to the blaze. On top of that, crews were dealing with the extreme cold. Orchard Park Fire Chief Richard Mrugalski said, "That's why we have the N...

Residents of Lynnhill Codominiums in Temple Hills ordered out because of fire code violations

About 100 people were ordered out of two squalid Temple Hills condominium buildings Tuesday , but a group of defiant residents said they are not leaving because they have nowhere to go. Fire officials warned the manager, owners and tenants of Lynnhill Condominiums last week about multiple fire-code violations, including towering piles of garbage in trash chutes and trash storage rooms , inoperable fire doors and a broken alarm system . The seven-story twin-tower complex on Good Hope Avenue has struggled with finances and repairs for more than a decade. Utility companies have periodically shut off water and power over unpaid bills, and the Prince George’s County government has taken the condominium association to court repeatedly over code violations. “We want to avoid an Oakland or London situation,” said Thomas Himler, a top aide to County Executive Rushern L. Baker III (D), referring to two recent deadly fires at decrepit buildings in those cities. “This is a life and safe...

Should SF tax empty homes and buildings?

Image
San Francisco Supervisor Aaron Peskin has asked the city attorney to explore legislation to impose a vacancy tax on large property owners who leave residential and commercial buildings empty . During a supervisors meeting this month, Peskin said he continues to receive complaints about the impact of “ghost buildings” on neighborhoods. The problem is, nobody really knows how many vacant homes there are in the city and whether a vacancy tax would be legal or effective in freeing up much-needed housing. In an interview, Peskin cited a 28- unit apartment building at 1656 Powell St. that was vacated after a fire damaged some units in December 2013. It remains empty. The three-story building is in a prime North Beach location across from Washington Square Park . Four businesses on the building’s ground floor — a liquor store, a bar, a Thai restaurant and a seafood restaurant — are open, but the apartments above still have boarded-up windows and a littered lobby. Some work was done in the...

COLUMBUS – The Ohio Department of Insurance has created an insurance checklist to help college students and their parents ensure appropriate financial protections are in place for the upcoming school year . “Life away from home is a great opportunity for young adults to learn and grow, but it also presents considerations and challenges,” said Department Director Jillian Froment . “It is important that students and parents conduct an insurance review and consider including an insurance agent in the process.” Froment shared the following insurance information: Illness and Injury Dependent coverage - Any insurance plan or issuer that offers dependent coverage must remain available until the dependent reaches age 26 . Winston-Salem City Leaders Move Forward on Rolling Hills Apartments

WINSTON-SALEM- The city of Winston-Salem says it's stepping in to deal with problems at the Rolling Hills apartment complex . City officials say they're going to start assessing heavy fines over problems like leaky toilets and other issues at the apartments off Martin Luther King drive . For years the units at Rolling Hills apartments have gone through inspections and Winston- Salem city leader say for years a majority of them failed. City Councilman Derwin Montgomery said the city had been fair to ownership. "They're the worst I've seen in Rolling Hills over the time I've been on council and seen some of the issues we've had there,” said Montgomery. On Thursday, they made it clear they won't stand for negligent property managers after 110 units went through inspections, yet again. "Out of those, more than 90 of those units found violations of minimum housing code . Orders have been sent out to the owners to repair those units,” said Montgom...

Former health secretary stops in Dayton to support Obamacare

Published: Thursday, August 24, 2017 @ 2:28 PM By: Kaitlin Schroeder - Staff Writer The first health and human services secretary under President Barack Obama stopped in Dayton Thursday as part of a larger campaign to support the Affordable Care Act as it remains under fire from President Donald Trump ’s administration. Former Secretary Kathleen Sebelius , a Cincinnati native, said part of the reason for the bus tour, dubbed “Save My Care,” is because the fight over whether to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act is not over, despite the failed effort to pass a bill in July that would repeal parts of the ACA. “Part of it is to say this battle is a long way from being over because you still have a president and party leaders who say ‘We’re going to go right back and try to do this again when the Senate reconvenes,’” she said. In the ’90s, We Had ‘Friends.’ Now They Call It Co-Living.

Image
More prosaically, co-living can simply mean roommates and common rooms, like a dorm. For some developers, it’s a form of adaptive reuse: many co-living sites, like WeLive at 110 Wall Street , are leased, in this case from the landlord of what once was an office building, drained of its tenants by Hurricane Sandy. Slide Show Adventures in Co-Living Credit Photographs by Andrew White for The New York Times There are still co-living evangelists, like Brad Hargreaves of Common, who has promised that “the genuine and organic relationships our members build with each other,” as he wrote in a post for Medium, would not be tainted by allowing journalists to sleep over at Common properties (though they were welcome to tour). With over $23 million in financing, Common now operates in five cities, including out of eight houses in New York City. Some co-living ventures have collapsed under the weight of their ideals, like the utopian Pure House , started by Ryan Fix, now 42, in his Williamsburg l...

Confessions of Celebrity Assistants: What It's Really Like to Work for Hollywood's Rich and Famous

The first rule of Fight Club is you do not talk about Fight Club .  I'm sitting in the lobby of the Players Club, in Manhattan's Gramercy Park, waiting to meet my interview subject. She is a longtime celebrity assistant , a profession that is both hard to find and incredibly difficult to convince to talk to you about. I'm in the lobby because in order to walk past the entrance of the Players Club you have to be escorted by a member, and I'm waiting because her principal, which I will later learn is a fancy word that celebrity assistants use to describe their bosses, landed after a long flight with a laundry list of things he needed to talk about immediately.  It's during this time that my mind starts to wander to that classic and brutal  Brad Pitt movie.  The Players Club reminds me of Fight Club, if Fight Club took place in a Gothic revival mansion facing the only Manhattan park so exclusive that one needs a key to enter. And replace the barren cement walks with...
