Jeff Malachowski Daily News Staff @JMalachowskiMW MARLBOROUGH – Firefighters quickly put out a blaze inside an unoccupied residence at the Royal Crest apartments Tuesday afternoon , mostly limiting the damage to that one apartment, said Fire Chief Kevin Breen . A resident of the apartment complex called 911 after seeing smoke emanating from a third-floor balcony of one of the residential buildings at the facility around 12:45 p.m., said Breen. Fire crews arrived moments later and encountered heavy smoke and fire. Firefighters immediately began an aggressive outside attack on the blaze and were able to quickly put it out, said Breen. The apartment was empty, which aided crews in containing the fire to the apartment. Breen said if there had been furniture and other materials in the apartment, the fire could have spread and the damage could have been much worse. “The fire was just ready to break from the area of origin,” said Breen. “We were very fortunate.” The apartment ...

LUBBOCK, Texas - Lubbock Fire Rescue responded to a structure fire officials determined  to be arson.  LFR responded to a call at the Westridge Apartments on 1606 Elkhart Avenue. The fire was put out upon their arrival. LFR identified multiple points of ignition in a vacant apartment. "A lot of heavy smoke damage and heat damage," said Allen Martin, a fire investigator with the Lubbock Fire Marshall 's Office. "There was no furniture so it was mostly the carpet and a lot of smoke damage on the walls." According to the apartment complex manager , the apartment has been vacant for several months and no injuries were reported. LFR crews are still investigating.

SAN ANTONIO - Twelve people were displaced and two cats died in an apartment fire on the Northeast Side early Thursday morning . The fire broke out around 4:15 a.m. at the Saddlewood Apartment Homes in the 2500 block of NE Loop 410 near Starcrest Drive. San Antonio fire officials believe the fire started when a man fell asleep in a bed with a lit cigarette.  The batteries in the smoke alarm in the apartment had been removed, firefighters said. The fire damage was contained to the bedroom where it started, but heavy smoke spread to two other apartments. Several families had to temporarily leave their homes. "They were like, 'Well, you need to make sure everybody in your apartment's awake, because we might need to evacuate you guys,' said a woman who lived in the apartment building. Source: WAFB BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Firefighters responded to an electrical fire at a four- plex Friday morning in which one person had to receive treatment. The Baton Rouge Fire Department reported it happened on Sycamore Street, which is off North Foster Drive near Evangeline Street, around 6 a.m. Mark Miles with BRFD said investigators determined an electrical fire started in the attic and the flames were shooting through the roof when firemen made it to the scene. He added firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading to the other apartments. According to Miles, one patient was treated by EMS for chest pain. Two people were taken to the hospital from an apartment where a fire broke out this morning in Lower Paxton Township . The fire was reported around 6:15 a.m. at 261 N. Arlington Ave. in Stone Bridge Apartments off Colonial Road. Thurston Henry, who lives in the apartment above where the fire is believed to have started, said he was on his way to the gym when he discovered the fire. "I opened the front door and all this smoke hit me," Henry said. "I started knocking on doors to get people out." "That smoke was heavy - it made my eyes water," Henry said. He saw firefighters carry a man and woman out of the apartment below him, who Henry said was a mother and son. Lt. Ron Gramigni of Lower Paxton Township police said two people were taken to the hospital, and the fire marshal is investigating.
