Smart + Radical Web Design: A List Apart

Image
A List Apart is a very well-known blog among web designer s and developers; they recently relaunched their site with a fresh new design. The brand is recognized for its high quality content , careful and deliberate design decisions and forward-thinking approaches. With the web all a-craze with “ flat pixel designs “, it’s refreshing (although not surprising) that the ALA team didn ’t jump on the bandwagon. Yes, the site has a minimalist quality to it; yes, it relies on solid colors. But by no means does it leap onto the trend we see unfolding across the web. It really can be tempting to buy into the latest trends and styles and forget who you are. However, A List Apart did not fall into this trap. The new design is faithful to the visual roots of the site yet takes a vivid step forward . In some ways, this approach to website design is a radical one: There is no main navigation on the home page, no sidebars, no banner ads, no list of posts. Just a singular focus on the latest content....

Plans for this huge skyscraper to transform part of Manchester city centre will go before councillors today

Image
Plans for more than 750 flats - including a 40-storey skyscraper - in a huge new redevelopment around Angel Meadows will go before councillors today (Thursday). The proposals, intended to kick off more than 10,000 new homes stretching out towards Collyhurst, have been met with opposition from more than 50 residents and the local parks group amid fears it will cast the historic space into shade. Read More Plans by developers Far East Consortium (FEC) would see four separate blocks of apartments built around the fringes of the park, the tallest 40-storey tower at its corner with Gould Street. As part of the proposals FEC has offered to pay for improvements to the park, but Friends of Angel Meadow have formally objected to the proposal. Read More It says the plans would ‘cast the park in shadow’, not provide enough parking and will be higher than previously outlined by the council’s planning strategy for the area. FEC have also offered to pay £100,000 to help refurbish the historic...

On-site learning centers offer benefits to students – and renters

August 23, 2017 Madison, Wis. — When it came to getting homework done, the odds weren’t in Kebba Bojang’s favor. Like many teenagers, he admits, he had a tendency to procrastinate. And with no computer at home and the nearest library a long walk away, assignments often ranged from difficult to impossible.  Unlike most other high school students in similar predicaments, however, Mr. Bojang was able to find a solution in – quite literally – his own backyard.  Bojang, now 24 and entering his second year of pharmacy school at the University of Iowa, is representative of a range of success stories to have come out of Northport Apartments, a Section 8 housing development on Madison’s East Side. At the heart of the 140- unit apartment complex , both physically and metaphorically, is a humble brick building that holds a roomful of computers, a few quiet meeting rooms , and a team of residents-turned-staff eager to help their neighbors succeed.  After moving to Northport his sophomore year o...

This Couple's Insanely Chic Apartment Is Also Their Storefront

If the showroom for Rachel Cohen and Andres Modak's home-goods line, Snowe, looks an awful lot like an actual living room— that's because it is. Welcome to a new level of experiential shopping. More From In the Mag 20 articles Aug 15, 2017 A couple of months ago, Rachel Cohen and Andres Modak threw a dinner party at their New York apartment to celebrate Cohen's birthday. The spread was what one would expect from a design- conscious, well-heeled, thirtysomething Manhattan couple : The 35 guests were served buffet-style at the dining table—a sleek ebony wood affair outfitted with chic, no- frills white serving platters and meticulously lined stacks of matching dinner plates . A friend came over beforehand to mix a special cocktail , which was doled out in on- trend stemless cocktail glasses . The only difference: The plates, the glasses, the napkins, and every fork and knife were all for sale. The couple's dining table set with Snowe tableware Advertisement - C...

(Photo: Courtesy) LAS CRUCES - A new, 200- unit apartment complex is springing up on the city’s East Mesa and could be leasing the first units in about six months. Willow Springs Apartments will be located off of Bixler Avenue, north of US 70 and behind the now-closed Cattleman’s Steak House on Bataan Memorial West . The property is being developed by Dillon Mountain Enterprises , LLC. which is owned by Paul Curry and his son, Jared Curry. The Currys acquired the property in 2006 from a church which had plans to build on the site but opted to purchase a building in town instead. Construction on the 14.12-acre property will require the Currys to pave more than 1,000 feet of Bixler Avenue, one of the city’s oldest platted but undeveloped rights-of-way. The completion of Bixler will open up adjoining properties to development, Jared said. “We had the property for 11 years,” Jared said. “ Ten years ago our original t...

Formula Nero DH Fork - First Look

Image
Formula is a resurgent company right now. Maybe best known for their brakes, they launched their suspension line in 2012 with their 33 fork. Since then they have taken a cautious path for development, but have quietly and completely revamped their entire range of products. Only last year they added their burly single crown Selva fork and all-new Cura brake platform . As well as the headline launches they have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to refine and perfect their damping performance, as we found out with them last December, to the point where their suspension can hold its own against the best on the market. Yet they are a company that has always been closely tied to the downhill side of the sport, so the inevitable question was: when would they add a dual crown fork ? The Nero fork is their answer to that question. This year you may have spied the prototypes for this fork aboard the bikes of Argentina Bike , the top DH racing team in Italy. While Loris Revelli or Fran...

Space-Saving Baby Items for Small Houses, Apartments

Image
You’re expecting a baby…congrats! Whether this is your first or fourth bundle of joy, one thing is true—you need certain items to survive the first year. Take a look at any registry list and you might become a bit overwhelmed by all the “musts”—cribs, strollers, pacifiers, diapers and car seats are just the tip of the iceberg. And if you happen to be an apartment-dweller, or live somewhere that is void of ample space, deciding which products you actually need is even trickier. Below we’ve rounded up 10 items you definitely want (nay, need!), all of which are smaller than typical and/or can be easily stored when not in use. Because when you’ve only got a few hundred square feet of space to live in, you don’t want to be swallowed up by all that baby gear. THE CRIB You may have always dreamed of lying your sweet baby to bed in a sleigh crib, but a teensy nursery—or no nursery at all—likely rules that dream out. What to do? Well, first, don’t scrimp on quality. Just because you need a sma...

Here's the Truth About Wood Veneers

When you learn that a piece of furniture has a veneer, does it make you cringe a little? Admittedly us, too. But wood veneers, in fact, are a traditional and structurally significant aspect of furniture-making that still come into play in contemporary design. "Wood veneers have been used in furniture-making and millwork techniques for over 200 years," says interior designer Cate Caruso , of Studio C, who uses them for all kinds of high- quality custom furnishings . In woodworking, a veneer is actually a "paper thin" cut of wood that's applied to both sides of a strong core surface , like furniture-grade MDF or substrate material, to seal and stabilize it—which is critically important when you're fashioning built-in furniture or anything with a mechanism. The reason is simple: Solid wood expands and contracts as the temperature changes, and your apartment isn't temperature controlled no matter how powerful your A.C. unit is. A dining table, for instance...

Sunday Notebook: More communities, more homes coming | Jacksonville News, Sports and Entertainment

More homes and yet more homes are going in, with new communities popping up . San Pablo The Silverfield Group of Jacksonville has purchased 21.85 acres at the north end of Pablo Point Drive , nestled in between Pablo Point to the south and Queen’s Harbour to the north. With mostly marsh to the east, it’s about the last bit of buildable land in the immediate area. There, they’re going to put Waterside at San Pablo , a single- family community zoned for up to 42 lots, a minimum of 90-100 feet wide. Home prices are expected to be in the $400s to $600s. Leed Silverfield said the project is still in design and engineering, but they hope to break ground early next year. Builders haven’t been chosen. He said it hasn’t been determined if it will be gated. Silverfield paid $1,175,000 for the property, buying it from the Hodges family. Ponte Vedra A new 23-lot, single- home community is going into Ponte Vedra Beach . EvenTide at 1044 Ponte Vedra Blvd . is being developed by GreenPointe Comm...
