In January 2015, a massive fire in Edgewater, N.J., demonstrated that buildings with sprinkler systems are not always protected against fire. The blaze destroyed 240 residential apartments and displaced 500 people from the Edgewater Avalon apartment building . The fire began when a maintenance worker’s plumbing torch accidentally ignited wooden wall studs , and flames quickly spread throughout the structure. Fifteen minutes passed before workers called the fire department . In that time, the fire spread throughout combustible void spaces (between walls and floors) and soon engulfed the building. Emergency personnel from 35 different cities and towns ultimately responded to the incident. Thankfully, there were no fatalities. Fire rescue crews were called to a high rise apartment building fire in Northeast Miami -Dade. The incident happened Saturday afternoon at the 7900 block of Northeast Bayshore Court . According to officials, the building was evacuated after reports of a fire in the second floor storage room . The fire was contained to a small corner thanks to the buildings’ sprinkler system. The fire was eventually put out by fire rescue. There wasn’t too much damage, but the sprinkler system damaged electrical wires . There was also significant water damage . No one was injured. CINCINNATI -- Police say a pair of 20-year- olds set fires in an under- construction luxury apartment building overnight . Duncan Ray and Ryan Barnes got into the high-rise building between Eighth and Sycamore through a parking garage before setting fires in a bathroom and common area on two different floors, according to police. Both men appeared in court Wednesday morning , each charged with arson for one fire, though police said they're suspected of setting several others. A snarling pit bull came to the defense of his drugged-out owner who was fighting with another junkie Friday morning at a luxury high-rise in Midtown, police said. The dog attacked his owner’s antagonist and left him with a bunch of bite wounds and scratches on the ninth floor of The Biltmore on W. 47th near Eighth Ave. just before 9 a.m., fire officials said.
