At Stratford House, a renovation celebration | Business

The new owner of Stratford House promised to invest $3.5 million to expand services and upgrade the senior living facility when it changed hands in July 2016 — and on Tuesday, the top-to-bottom renovations at Commonwealth Senior Living at Stratford House were unveiled. The grand, old building — built in 1884 and added on to several times over during its life as a women’s college and senior living center — has fresh paint, new carpet, furniture and décor. And many rooms have been repurposed to make moving around to various activities easier for the residents while adding more amenities. Even residents’ apartments were renovated. The combination of independent living and assisted living apartments means residents in independent living apartments who need to move into quarters where intensive care is offered only move a short distance and are still in familiar surroundings. *** Resident Ed Smith joined Richard Brewer , CEO of the Commonwealth Senior Living facilit...

Aging baby boomers ignite explosion of jobs in health care, senior housing

But young people may not be fully aware of the "great opportunities" that await them in this sector of the job market, said Gisi, whose company owns and operates senior living facilities across the Upper Midwest. "People realize that there will be a lot more people in old age, but they don't see the lack of workers available to care for those people, what with the birth rate collapsing in the early '70s," said Gisi. Edgewood owns and operates assisted -living and memory- care facilities in 55 communities. "There'll be a significant need for health care workers in all of our communities," he said. "The demand will continue to grow." The time frame of 2020 to 2040 will be a period of significant aging of the population, based on U.S. Census data, which will dramatically increase the demand for senior housing and health care. In that time period, the number of people who are 65 or older will increase by 46 percent. "There will...

Apartment boom slowing; labor shortage, rising lumber prices cited | Local News

Work is progressing on some high profile housing developments in Terre Haute, but one project is on hold, another has been delayed and a third scaled back.. A shortage of skilled labor and rising lumber costs prompted Thompson Thrift to shelve a planned $28 million, 232- unit expansion of Sycamore Terrace apartments , off New Margaret Drive, according to Paul Thrift, company president. And, after an initial start date set for earlier this year, Carmel- based Mainstreet Student Living is now looking to begin construction in April on a $20 million, 162-unit complex near Union Hospital with completion in August 2019. Mainstreet’s project was pushed back “in an effort to ensure our partners could execute our plans and guarantee an on-time opening,” said Justin Farris, managing director. A third project involving market rate apartments on Sidenbender Road near 25th Street and Margaret Avenue has been reduced in scope with construction scheduled to begin next spring on...

Lessons from the storm: Effects of extreme weather linger more among children and older adults

Ruth Bennett woke up at 1 a.m. and looked through the doorway of her independent living apartment in Walker, about 20 miles west of Baton Rouge. It was Aug. 13, 2016, and rain had been pouring down for two days. Bennett was worried about her car flooding. She saw water creeping up to the parking lot, but her  car looked safe . She crawled back into bed.  Two hours later, one of the employees of Southern Pines Retirement Community  was pounding on Bennett's door. Not only had Bennett's car flooded, the facility was surrounded by water. The employee told Bennet to grab what she needed, including her medicine. "In two hours it had come from nothing," Bennett recalled recently . "It was very frightening, especially when you're old." The elderly and children are among the most vulnerable populations to extreme weather events . That's in part because they often do not have the ability to mobilize quickly or on their own, and they're at a greater risk...

Nova Classical Academy )" width="718" />(Courtesy of Nova Classical Academy ) Off West Seventh Street , a charter school and an apartment developer have bumped heads over building heights. By a vote of 6-0, the St. Paul City Council on Wednesday declined to side with Nova Classical Academy in a dispute over the height of a proposed apartment building at 763 Kay Ave. Chase Real Estate , which has opened two apartment buildings in the new Victoria Park neighborhood , has proposed a third building of four floors and 50 units. Nova, a K-12 charter school, recently appealed a decision of the planning commission, which allowed changes to the Victoria Park Master Plan to accommodate the proposed building height of up to 49.5 feet. The master plan had previously envisioned the site to someday host 13 townhomes with a maximum height of 40 feet. The Chase proposal , recently amended, calls for 50 apartments with a maximum building height of 45 feet. The structure heigh...
