It’s been only two months since the Portland Housing Authority opened Bayside Anchor , its first new housing development in decades. But already, the low- income housing provider is poised to file plans for two additional projects , totaling more than 155 units of housing at a time when a dearth of affordable housing in Maine’s largest city is reaching crisis levels . “This is the continuation of our effort to be a part of the solution to the affordable housing crisis in Portland,” said Jay Waterman, the housing authority ’s development director. The authority is looking to build a 55- unit apartment building at 58 Boyd St. in the city’s East Bayside neighborhood . Cape Town property developers FWJK have promised that their planned city centre skyscraper will include affordable housing - but the price of the "affordable" apartments will be "less than R800 000". If it is given the go-ahead, the Zero-2-One skyscraper planned for the corner of Strand and Adderley Streets will be the tallest building in Cape Town and will contain more than 620 apartments, GroundUp reports. FWJK says affordable housing has been included in the plans, through the provision of 104 apartments which will sell for "less than R800 000", according to regional director Craig Armstrong . Work is progressing on some high profile housing developments in Terre Haute, but one project is on hold, another has been delayed and a third scaled back.. A shortage of skilled labor and rising lumber costs prompted Thompson Thrift to shelve a planned $28 million, 232- unit expansion of Sycamore Terrace apartments , off New Margaret Drive, according to Paul Thrift, company president. And, after an initial start date set for earlier this year, Carmel- based Mainstreet Student Living is now looking to begin construction in April on a $20 million, 162-unit complex near Union Hospital with completion in August 2019. Mainstreet’s project was pushed back “in an effort to ensure our partners could execute our plans and guarantee an on-time opening,” said Justin Farris, managing director. NORFOLK The housing market may be struggling, but apartment construction in Norfolk continues to boom. The City Council is expected to approve a rezoning today that will allow a 180-unit, $20. 7 million upscale apartment development called the Meadowood Apartments to be constructed off North Military Highway . It would be the seventh apartment complex that opened, received city approval or on which construction began in the past year. Moreover, two other apartment complexes have been proposed. Meadowood would be built on 7.7 acres currently zoned for industrial use on International Boulevard adjacent to a Kmart and the Park Crescent Apartments . Rents would top out at $1,450, said Taylor Franklin, vice president of multi family development for S.L. Nusbaum Realty . It would be a gated community, Franklin said.
