In a couple of weeks, my 5-year-old twins will start kindergarten and be in a class setting for the first time in their lives. They were never in daycare or pre-K. Since I work the night shift, that would've meant not seeing them in the mornings. My husband and I have enjoyed teaching them a few things daily before I go to work, including Spanish, their ABCs and numbers. They can also recite for you the acceleration of gravity thanks to their architect dad. But, alas, it's time to turn them over to the real pros. People keep asking me how I feel. Before I answer, let me rewind a bit. The last couple of years have been hard grappling with this moment. Orchard Hills School recently held an Amazing Race fundraiser to benefit the school’s Parent Teacher Organization . The organization helps fund after school programs , assemblies, school supplies , library books and a computer lab, said PTO President Darin Pendergraft . During the Amazing Race, the school raised $13,000. Activities included an obstacle course, a quiz, a challenge to find enough ping pong balls to spell out “Hawks,” and a library challenge to find a book using the Dewey Decimal System , said Jackie Finazzo, co- vice president of fundraising. The idea for the Amazing Race came from parent Kim Okamura , who experienced something similar at another school. The 15- acre campus opened this year with fifth and sixth grade students . Eventually it will serve students in grades K-8. The school, on Culver Drive in Irvine, is in the Tustin Unified School District . He is from Suffield, Connecticut. They earlier recovered the remains of Electronics Technician 3rd Class Kenneth Aaron Smith , 22, who the Navy listed as being from New Jersey. His mother said Smith grew up in Novi, Michigan, and moved to Norfolk, Virginia, as a teenager with his father. The military said five sailors were injured and 10 were missing following Monday's collision. The Navy said missing soldiers were from Missouri, Texas, Maryland, Ohio, New York, Connecticut and Illinois. The collision tore a hole in the ship's left rear hull and flooded adjacent compartments , including crew berths and machinery and communication rooms. MUSKEGON, MI - Muskegon police are "working hard" to investigate what are now two incidents of racial graffiti discovered in Muskegon and to determine whether they are connected to a noose left on a school playground. The latest incident involving graffiti left on an exterior door at the Glen Oaks Apartments complex was reported just after midnight Wednesday, said a spokesman for the Muskegon Police Department . The discovery of the graffiti involving the N-word came a day after similar graffiti was found on a statue at Muskegon High School . Over the weekend, a noose was discovered hanging on a swing set at the playground of Muskegon Public Schools ' Glenside School. Three people, including a 10-year-old child, are dead after what police are now calling a murder/suicide inside a Woodhaven apartment on Monday. According to police, dead are 49-year-old Sharry Multop and her grandson, Christopher Baltzer. Police said Terry Lee Wyatt , 62, was the woman’s boyfriend and shot them inside his apartment at Marsh Creek Village Apartments in the 25000 block of Marsh Creek Blvd . before turning the gun on himself. “He shot himself in the chin/head, so all three had wounds to the head,” Detective Lt. Scott Fraczek said. The bodies were discovered at about 7:45 p.m. when the boy’s mother returned to the apartment with her 8-year-old daughter just after the shooting occurred.
