Mid-year economic check: Fort Worth retail, real estate thriving | News

The commercial real estate landscape in Fort Worth is thriving despite some blips in retail due to the changing behavior of shoppers and growing competition. But a bright spot in the Fort Worth retail market is the opening of several new upscale stores in the Clearfork development, including a Tesla auto showroom . Experts offered some insight and predictions on the local commercial real estate market , painting a largely rosy picture of the current landscape at a Business for Breakfast Series session on Aug. 23 sponsored by the Fort Worth Business Press . One of the biggest challenges is the retail industry and it’s a national as well as local situation arising from being “over-stored,” said Steve Coslik, chairman and CEO of the Woodmont Co., the Fort Worth- based property management company that manages about 20 million square feet of retail shopping centers , enclosed shopping malls and outlet centers in 22 states. “Retailers are going through a terrifying challenge righ...

Waterford Lakes, Avalon Park sitting pretty with retail, schools, roads

Image
Waterford Lakes is a suburban, family-centric haven that’s probably best known for the Waterford Lakes Town Center , a formidable shopping center that spans both sides of State Road 434 , known locally as the Alafaya Trail. Proximity to the University of Central Florida and Florida State Road 408 are also prime motivators for those considering a move to this east Orlando community . Waterford Lakes is a neighborhood, not a city; homes here have an Orlando address . Waterford Lakes residents want for very little in the way of major shopping and dining — huge big-box merchants (Old Navy, Super Target, Best Buy, etc.) are prevalent, along with popular restaurant chains , a massive Regal theater , and smaller but equally well known retailers. Despite a preponderance of big names, independent shops and cafes do proliferate, though you’ll need to search them out. Most blend into the architecture, most of which is new and attractive, but largely strip-mall/shopping center-style. Near th...

Plans for revamped San Marcos shopping center include 233 apartments

An Austin developer has changed course on plans to revamp a San Marcos shopping center . Since taking control of Springtown Center in 2014, Endeavor Real Estate has landed a number of high- profile tenants to fill what was, at the time, a sickly strip mall that was only 10 percent occupied. Additions have included heavy hitters such as Chuy’s, Gold’s Gym and The Spot, an entertainment venue. While Endeavor had initially been in talks with a number of interested retailers to fill the remaining space in the shopping center , the developer has decided to go another route. Instead, it is demolishing a chunk of the center between Chuy’s and the former Target store that’s now home to Gold’s Gym and The Spot to make way for a multi- story apartment building that will have 233 units with 32,000 square feet of ground- floor retail space . The project will be called The Lyndon after former President Lyndon B. Johnson who attended nearby Texas State University back when it was known as So...

In their first summer in America, each step felt momentous . The first shopping trip to Walmart, the kids playing in a pool and taking the bus to school, all put the horrors of war further behind them—the years without sufficient food, the bombs that destroyed their house and ruined their city of Homs, the month they cam...

If the showroom for Rachel Cohen and Andres Modak's home-goods line, Snowe, looks an awful lot like an actual living room— that's because it is. Welcome to a new level of experiential shopping. More From In the Mag 20 articles Aug 15, 2017 A couple of months ago, Rachel Cohen and Andres Modak threw a dinner party at their New York apartment to celebrate Cohen's birthday. The spread was what one would expect from a design- conscious, well-heeled, thirtysomething Manhattan couple : The 35 guests were served buffet-style at the dining table—a sleek ebony wood affair outfitted with chic, no- frills white serving platters and meticulously lined stacks of matching dinner plates . A friend came over beforehand to mix a special cocktail , which was doled out in on- trend stemless cocktail glasses . The only difference: The plates, the glasses, the napkins, and every fork and knife were all for sale. The couple's dining table set with Snowe tableware Advertisement - C...

'City' living in the 'burbs? Try an aging office park

By Katherine Shaver The Washington Post From the rooftop terrace of their new townhouse, Keisuke and Idalia Yabe take in their suburban Maryland neighborhood : a staid, 1970s- era office park of glass office buildings and concrete parking garages . The Yabes say they have found the advantages of urban living in a shorter commute and the ability to walk to shopping centers and a park. They also have what feels like the best of suburbia -- mature trees, plentiful parking , Bethesda's sought-after schools and a more affordable mortgage. From the Washington and New York suburbs to North Carolina's Research Triangle Park , traditional corporate campuses that have struggled since the Great Recession are trying to transform from sterile worksites into vibrant mini-towns. In addition to housing, they're adding restaurants, grocery stores, playgrounds and outdoor concert spaces -- anything to draw people in and make them want to stay. Although it might sound strange at first, th...

Greenhaven area – despite early changes – became desirable community

Zacharias Park was named in honor of a former land owner in today’s Greenhaven area . // Photo by Lance Armstrong Editor’s Note: This is part two of a two-part series about the history of the Greenhaven 70 subdivision. Greenhaven 70, as presented in the first article of this series – which was published in the Oct. 18 edition of this paper – was established as the Pocket’s first subdivision. As previously mentioned, in 1958, L & P Land Development acquired more than 700 acres for the development of Greenhaven 70. Before any subdivision could be approved by the city, however, L & P was required to present their proposed plan for the Pocket’s entire 4,674 acres. This plan was known as the Pocket Area General Development Plan and included schools, a shopping center , two churches, a hospital with medic...

Calabasas (Finally!) Gets Its First Luxury Fashion Destination, The Kingdom

Image
Inside The Kingdom in Calabasas. Photo: courtesy The city of Calabasas, Calif. is something of an anomaly. Despite being home to countless celebrities — namely the Kardashians, Wests and Jenners, who arguably ignited a celeb migration to the hilly enclave — as well as the inspiration for an entire Yeezy collection and the setting for Dior's latest Cruise show , it's a somewhat unremarkable Los Angeles suburb .  Sure, it's wealthy — the median income was $124,583 in 2010, and it's likely gone up since — pretty, and rife with gated communities , making it appealing to famous people like Drake and Justin Bieber who want privacy. But unlike, say, Beverly Hills or Brentwood, there aren't many places for wealthy inhabitants to gather, "see and be seen" and spend their money. Development on this front has been slow: In 1998, Caruso, the company behind The Grove, opened The Commons at Calabasas, an outdoor shopping center whose tenants were always pretty basic....
