The Broe Group is demolishing two existing garden apartments and replacing them with two overwhelming 30-story towers near the intersection of Downing St. and Ellsworth Ave. The twin skyscrapers will be the tallest buildings outside of downtown Denver and will be equal in height to the One Tower Center on 17th Street, the 15th tallest building in Denver. New Towson apartments will be close to everything

April 28, 2001 | By Andrew A. Green | Andrew A. Green,SUN STAFF A developer is to break ground Tuesday on an apartment complex in downtown Towson that Baltimore County officials hope will demonstrate to other builders that suburbanites are interested in the urban idea of living close to work, shops and entertainment. Residents of the $20 million, 264- unit Dulaney Crescent apartment building will be able to walk to the Super Fresh without crossing a major street. They'll be closer to the Hecht's in Towson Town mall than Hecht's is to Nordstrom. Based on the surrounding traffic patterns , it will be more trouble to drive to the barber shop and dry cleaners than to walk. As sprawl has become a dirty word in recent years, the idea of creating compact communities that unify living, working and playing has become the urban planning vogue , in contrast to much post- World War II development that segregated houses from offices from shops. "I think [the apartments are]...

Georgette Braun: Forest Glen an affordable-housing inspiration in Rockford - News - Rockford Register Star

By Georgette BraunRockford Register Star Forest Glen's name has been popping up in conversations the past few months among movers and shakers in Rockford. They're saying the 140- unit apartment complex near McFarland Road and East Riverside Boulevard — with a swimming pool, tennis courts, garages and manicured landscaping, as well as comparatively little crime surrounding it — is a good example of what affordable housing should be: 56 units are set aside for income-restricted renters.  The talk about Forest Glen Apartments has been fueled by a plan that was pulled back last week by a Wisconsin-based developer to build 65 apartments in east Rockford off South New Towne Drive. Eighty-eight percent would be for low-income renters. The plan called for housing about 150 residents, most from the 650- resident Fairgrounds Valley , a decaying property on the west side that the Rockford Housing Authority wants to raze. The 210-unit complex is 47 years old. Residents of the New T...

Developer proposes apartment project in Mechanicsville | Hanover County

Before Larry Shaia finished developing Charleston Ridge Apartments last year, there hadn’t been an apartment community built in Hanover County in nearly 20 years. Shaia hopes Hanover won ’t have to wait that long for its next batch of apartments. Shaia has proposed to build a five-building, 207- unit apartment community in Mechanicsville behind the Goodwill and Food Lion off Mechanicsville Turnpike. Shaia has requested that 20 acres in the area be rezoned to allow the project to move forward. The project has been dubbed Cambridge Square Apartments and will sit on a roughly 22-acre site that has wetlands that will be used for green space, Shaia said. Charleston Ridge wrapped up construction in 2016. Shaia is a developer with Charter Realty and Development Co., which developed Charter Creek Apartments in 1997. Shaia said that after Charleston Ridge finished , he knew he wanted to do another high- end apartment project in Mechanicsville where he saw a need for Cla...

Marshall project helps meet “workforce” housing need

Washburn Place townhouses will rent from $895 to $1,125 per month. Despite a sometimes soggy spring, construction of the 30-unit “workforce” townhouse project in Marshall remains on track. Washburn Place on Salem Avenue should be completed by year's end, as planned, Windy Hill Development Co. President Kim Hart said. “We’ve had the advantage of an open winter,” Mr. Hart said. “So we were able to work all the way through the winter.” The two-story, 1,130-square-foot units will include three bedrooms, extra insulation, energy-efficient windows and “water-saving devices” on all faucets and toilets, Mr. Hart said. He expects the townhouses, which will rent for $895 to $1,125 per month, to lease quickly. “The need for workforce housing in all of Northern Virginia is just tremendous,” Mr. Hart said. “At all Windy Hill properties there’s always a long waiting list .” The Loudoun- based nonprofit ’s project serve “working people,” he said. “There are many, many people that are earni...

Sinta Tantra: 'People say my art makes them happy'

Next week the Folkestone Triennial begins with the unveiling of the latest artworks to transform this formerly rundown seaside town . Rather than rocking up every three years, dumping a load of contemporary art around and disappearing quickly and forgettably, as some similar events do, the organisers have ensured that much of the art remains and becomes part of the fabric of the town — works by Mark Wallinger, Cornelia Parker and Tracey Emin, among others, are now part of the Folkestone townscape. Among the new permanent pieces in the fourth Folkestone Triennial is a work by Sinta Tantra, the London-based creator of colourful, geometric public art . She’s been tasked with transforming The Cube, an adult education centre that sits awkwardly and lumpenly at the top of Tontine Street, the much- regenerated road leading to the city’s harbour. The triennial’s curatorial team, led by Lewis Biggs, asked Tantra to turn The Cube “into the landmark building that its site at the top of Tont...
