Aspen Heights project moves forward in Amherst

AMHERST — A large apartment complex proposed for Route 9 at the Amherst- Hadley town line continues to move through the permitting processes in both communities, even as some residents express worry about the size of the project and how it could impact their neighborhood. Amherst Planning Director Christine Brestrup said people have raised several issues with the 131- apartment Aspen Heights residential community in both written comments and orally at a Zoning Board of Appeals hearing earlier this month. One of the most prominent concerns, Brestrup said, is whether people who live at the proposed complex , to be built at 408 Northampton Road, will drive through the Greenleaves Retirement Community and Windfield Family and Senior Estates. Because Northampton Road is a divided highway, those living at Aspen Heights will have to exit the complex by taking a right, heading east, Brestrup said. To travel west toward the shopping malls, the roads through Greenleaves and Windfield migh...

Ridge road paving project gets funding boost

Image
A solution has been found to pave the entire stretch of Ridge Road between Warren and Ford. (Photo: Bill Bresler | hometownlife.com) Supporters of a Ridge Road paving project on Canton's west side had hailed the plan with one caveat — a small section would remain a gravel road for lack of money. Not anymore, apparently. Township Supervisor Pat Williams has convinced Wayne County to share the $600,000 cost of paving a 900- foot section south of Hanford, meaning all of Ridge between Warren and Ford roads can now be paved. That's welcome news to residents like Rich Felcher, who lives in a subdivision off Ridge Road. "It only makes sense to do the entire project at once," he said. "I'm ecstatic that it's getting paved." In South Florida, Caprini recently completed construction of a “green” home in Pompano Beach at 4620 N.W. 18th Ave. The project, dubbed Modernista, was recognized by the mayor of Pompano Beach in March and won a national award in February from the Structural Insulated Panel Association , earning first place in the affordable housing...

How Jane Jacobs fought 'urban renewal' in the West Village

Image
"It's the same old story. First the builder picks the property, then he gets the Planning Commission to designate it, then the people get bulldozed out of their homes." - Jane Jacobs Under Title I of the Federal Housing Act of 1949, federal funds became available to cities for demolition or rehabilitation of blighted areas, and throughout the 1950s, Robert Moses' Slum Clearance Committee lived up to its name, razing entire New York neighborhoods in the name of urban renewal. In 1960, the city's Housing and Redevelopment Board took over those duties, promising to displace residents less brusquely than had been Moses' way. But the city Planning Commission continued to support the basic tenets of urban renewal, believing that New Yorkers would ultimately be much happier in modern, less crowded housing with lots of open spaces. Jane Jacobs, a 45-year-old editor at Architectural Forum, had another opinion: Urban planners , she believed, were des...
