UConn Students Move into Storrs, Stamford Residence Halls This Weekend

Image
Thousands of students will be returning to UConn campuses over the coming few days, including about 12,400 moving into Storrs residence halls and about 260 who will be the first occupants of UConn Stamford ’s new student housing. Early arrivals for the 2017- 18 academic year began last weekend at Storrs. Freshmen start moving in to residence halls at 7 a.m. Friday, followed by upperclassmen and transfer students over the weekend. Overall, about 23,000 undergraduate students will start classes Monday at Storrs and the regional campuses. Many thousands of additional students are also enrolled at other locations in UConn’s schools of law, medicine, and dental medicine. The logistics of this year’s move-in weekend on the Storrs campus are expected to be more challenging than usual due to road construction. (Peter Morenus/UConn File Photo) Logistics of the move-in weekend on the Storrs campus are expected to be more challenging than usual due to road construction, notably the closure ...

UConn Move-In Weekend: Forget the GPS, Watch the Signs

STORRS, CT — Massive construction projects on the main University of Connecticut campus mean students returning to campus this week will be facing a move-in weekend like never before. Some students who arranged early move -in are already on campus, but the bulk of the 12,400 who live in Storrs residence halls will be descending on the campus beginning at 7 a.m. Friday. Freshmen are up first Friday, followed by upperclassmen and transfer students over the weekend. The biggest piece of advice for far from administrators for Friday has been to go old school while driving to the new school. That means plugging the dorm addresses into GPS units is essentially useless because of North Campus closures and traffic restrictions along North Eagleville Road from Route 195 and its side streets . Movers should also note that all traffic is one-way on Alumni Drive between Hillside Road and Hilltop Apartments this week. "The best thing to do is to watch the signs as you start to approach the ...

How a Chinatown-by-the-Sea Popped Up on the Jersey Shore

Lee B. Lok (center) at his store, Quong Yuen Shing & Co, on Mott Street, New York, c. 1917. Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) Collection One day in 1941, Lee Ng Shee went for a stroll in Bradley Beach , New Jersey. She was the wife of a prominent merchant in New York City Chinatown named Lee B. Lok, who in 1891 had established Quong Yuen Shing & Company, a general store on Mott Street. The family liked to spend their summers on the Jersey Shore, though it was a challenge to find landlords who would rent to nonwhites. Lee Ng Shee was passing a house on Newark Avenue, stepping carefully on her bound feet, when a woman came out on the porch. “Are you looking for a house?” the woman called out. “Would you like to buy this one?” Lee knew a deal when she heard one. “Two thousand dollars later, Lee B. Lok and family were ensconced in a summer bungalow of their very own in the village where twenty years before they would have been lucky to be able to rent some rooms over a store,” ...

Huma Abedin made $65K in the months after Hillary's loss

Image
Huma Abedin has gone high fashion and high society, with the Hillary Clinton aide enjoying a weekend in the Hamptons just days after she was featured in the September issue of 'W.' A single and ready to mingle Abedin, 41, was spotted on Sunday at the Southampton home of Moda Operandi founder Lauren Santo Domingo and her music executive husband Andres .  Lauren and Andres, whose father is billionaire Colombian business magnate Julio , were hosting their annual all- white Badminton tournament at the estate this weekend, which they scooped up for a reported $30 million. The couple split their time between that residence, an apartment in Paris and their $18.5million townhouse on Gramercy Park in New York City.  And while Abedin certainly does not have that kind of money, she still seems to be doing just fine in the wake of her boss' defeat last November, with the latest quarterly filings from the Hillary for America campaign revealing that the aide has received $64,369.94 ...
