High Point plans to make downtown more pedestrian friendly

HIGH POINT, N.C. -- Joseph Carver has lived in High Point for the past decade. He walks to work everyday, walks to the library and walks to visit his mom in her downtown apartment. "I just like to walk," Carver said. "I've always been an active person." Carver wishes more people would do the same by getting around on foot instead of driving. "People around here are crazy when it comes to driving so you have to be really careful," he said. The city is trying to encourage more people to walk around and a federally funded transportation plan shows how it can be done. "Not everyone has a car and you need access to the train depot, the transit facility, so providing safer more accessible sidewalks, bicycle lanes, it just improves the transportation network as a whole," High Point Transportation Planning Administrator Greg Venable said. One of the top suggestions looks at Main Street around the train depot. The recommendation is to carve out bik...

Ideas floated for fixing Freeman's Bridge Road

GLENVILLE — Residents' ideas to improve the look and safety of Freeman's Bridge Road range from constructing a roundabout at its intersection with Route 50 to finding a way to remove the railroad crossing that splits the corridor in half. "You really need more lanes; you need sidewalks," said Jim Mastroianni, who owns the Glenville Sportsplex just south of the railroad crossing, during a planning workshop Wednesday at the Glenville Senior Center . Mastroianni has operated at the Freeman's Bridge Road location for nearly 25 years. "It's a lot busier than it was. A lot needs to change," he said. Mastroianni was among about 50 people who turned out for the workshop, which was part of the town's $50, 000 Complete Streets study of what can be done to improve the corridor. A focus is being placed on making the road more bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly. The goal of Wednesday's meeting was to gather ideas that can be studied and possibly included...

Affordable, Unsubsidized Housing Planned for Near West Oakland BART

Panoramic Interests is the developer who recently revised it’s design for 1,031 apartment units to be built near West Oakland BART (1). Previously, the plans called for 1,400 units, but was changed to 1,031 units by removing all of the one-bedrooms, and all but two studio apartments from the plans. Other interesting facts about the revised design include removing all luxury amenities such as gyms, pet spas and chef kitchens. Also removed from the floor plans are any empty corridors, to make most efficient use of the space to provide affordable, unsubsidized housing near a transportation hub. Also, no parking is provided for the complex, just seven spaces for car-sharing and deliveries. So occupants will be relying on public transit and car services. This is certainly a design for the post-modern era that should please the millennials. The estimated rents will be around $2,500 for 2 bedrooms and about $3,500 for a 4 bedroom unit. Instead of luxury amenities, the complex will include 2...
