Man, 24, shot and killed at Reflections Apartments - News - Gainesville Sun

One person was detained for questioning but was not labeled a suspect.

The person who shot and killed a man in southwest Gainesville early Friday morning was detained and then released by the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, which has not yet determined whether charges should be filed.

Roderick Ray McCoy, 24, was shot and died later at UF Health Shands Hospital, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The name of the shooter and the circumstances that led to the shooting are not being released, Sgt. Chris Sims said.

“We know who the shooter is. The shooter has been questioned and released. The determination to file charges has not yet been made,” Sims said. “To say when they will conclude the investigation would be premature and speculating.”

The shooting was reported shortly after 2 a.m. at Reflections apartments at 205 SW 75th St. — also known as Tower Road — in the area of Building 5.

Several people, including the shooter, were taken to the sheriff’s office for questioning and all were released. Sims said they were cooperative with investigators.

Evidence is being analyzed as detectives continue the investigation. Once the investigation is complete, the agency will present its findings to the Eighth Circuit State Attorney’s Office to determine if criminal charges will be filed.

The complex was quiet Friday morning. Some deputies were parked outside of Building 5; Sims said detectives were working to get a search warrant for one of the residences.

Children’s toys, like scooters and red wagons, were outside apartments. One sidewalk had chalk drawings on it. Yellow lawn chairs were outside another building.

Larry Smith, 25, has lived at Reflections Apartments for four years, he said. He was surprised to learn of the shooting.

“It’s quiet,” he said. “Very quiet.”

He didn’t remember any violent incidents, he said, and until he saw ASO yellow tape blocking part of Building 5, he asked if a shooting had really happened there.
