How to Make Friends in College: A Comprehensive Guide

Image
Do you remember the first friend you made? The first person I consciously remember calling my “friend” (and later, “best friend”) was someone I met in preschool. I was probably four years old. We had similar interests, and complementary personalities (he was the big picture idea guy , I was the detail-oriented do-er). As I’ve continued through life, my friendships have shifted . I’ve made new friends along the way, deepened my relationship with existing friend s, and fallen out of touch with others. When you look at it this way, it seems like friendship is something that just “happens. ” You can’t control it, it would seem, and maybe it’s better not to. After all, you can’t force friendship. Yet, what I’ve come to realize in the past couple years is that while you can’t force or manufacture friendship, you can   seek and cultivate it . It isn’t completely out of your control. In fact, since it’s such an important part of living a happy life, it’s something that you put on autopilot a...

Victoria Alvarez - 2016 Program Participant

What inspired you to go abroad? I was inspired to go abroad after attending a study abroad fair at my university. I always knew studying abroad was an option, but I had always kind of looked past it, thinking it was too expensive or just not possible for me. But in my second year of college I walked through the study abroad fair and after talking to some of the representatives of different programs, I realized I needed to be a part of the experience. I had never left the United States and I knew I wanted to change that. The view while walking uphill to Acropolis in Athens, Greece Why did you choose CIEE? I chose the CIEE Global Institute Rome Open Campus because of my love for Roman history and art and my past experiences with CIEE. I was lucky enough to go abroad in January 2016 for three weeks with CIEE in Seville, Spain and after such a successful experience with the program, I chose to go abroad for four months in Rome. What was your favorite part about Rome? Where does one beg...

Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart

Things Fall apart - The Clan's Beliefs and Christian Beliefs There are many differences between the Clan's beliefs and Christian's beliefs. This is illustrated on pages 126-129, in the mention of `the one true god.' Both the tribe and the Missionaries have different perceptions on who this one true god is. The clan has trouble understanding the Christian beliefs as they have lived a tribal existence for so long. They have only ever been aware of their own culture, which makes it hard for them to adjust to the ways of the Christians. On arrival, the missionaries barely understand the tribe. They have very little knowledge of the cultural beliefs or rituals that the tribe revere. It seems inappropriate that they are willing to declare that the villagers' beliefs are false. "He told them that they worshipped false gods , gods of wood and stone." They don't even acknowledge that this too is a successful community, which works well under its method of reli...

The Safdie Brothers Are Classic New York Hustlers. Their Movies Might Make Them Legends.

The Safdie Brothers Are Classic New York Hustlers And their movies might make them legends. Before deciding he wanted to make a Safdie Brothers movie , the erstwhile heartthrob Robert Pattinson hadn ’t actually seen a Safdie Brothers movie . It was one still image — of the lead actress from their 2014 addiction drama Heaven Knows What — that led him to pick up the phone. “He said, ‘I wanna be on a movie set that had the energy that I imagine this had,’” Benny, 31, says. “Little did he know, there was no movie set,” Josh, 33, laughs. Adapted from the street life of its star, Arielle Holmes, Heaven Knows What is a breathless, booming piece of work — somehow both a plotless character study built on mumbly dialogue and stolen shots, and a punch to the face. “We were just this weird little crew making this movie in a very serious fashion.” For over a decade, that’s been the mission statement. The Safdies split a schizophrenic childhood on either side of the East River, with a dutifu...
