In January 2015, a massive fire in Edgewater, N.J., demonstrated that buildings with sprinkler systems are not always protected against fire. The blaze destroyed 240 residential apartments and displaced 500 people from the Edgewater Avalon apartment building . The fire began when a maintenance worker’s plumbing torch accidentally ignited wooden wall studs , and flames quickly spread throughout the structure. Fifteen minutes passed before workers called the fire department . In that time, the fire spread throughout combustible void spaces (between walls and floors) and soon engulfed the building. Emergency personnel from 35 different cities and towns ultimately responded to the incident. Thankfully, there were no fatalities. (Red Oak) -- A Red Oak youth is accused of setting fire to a house earlier this week. Red Oak Police say the 11-year-old juvenile was charged Friday with reckless use of fire in connection with the blaze destroying the residence at 211 West Reed Street Wednesday evening . Charges were filed following a joint investigation by police, the Red Oak Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal 's Office. Red Oak Fire Chief John Bruce tells KMA News the first unit responded to the fire, which originated in a garage attached to the west side of the house, at approximately 7:15 p.m. "The first arriving fire department person got there at 7:19," said Bruce. DURHAM – A fire that began after 12 noon Monday appeared to affect all 20 units of an apartment building before firefighters could get the blaze under control. No injuries were reported and all 40 of the building’s occupants were accounted for, according to the Durham Fire Department . In all, the fire displaced 30 residents as the building has been deemed a total loss with fire or smoke and water damage affecting all of the units. The fire took place at the Royal Oaks Apartments  on Mayfair Street near the Sam’s Club and Target on 15-501—north of the exit for Martin Luther King , Jr. Parkway. The Durham fire department responded to a 12:30 p.m. call. Seven fire trucks and 50 firefighters reported to the scene. According to the WFD, firefighters arrived to the scene around 11:37 p.m. and found light smoke showing . Flames were visible in the kitchen area after a size up. Fire crews quickly battled the flames and had the fire under control within five minutes of arrival. The Fayetteville Fire Department responded to a call at 11:19 a.m. regarding a possible apartment fire on the 800 block. Firefighters found smoke coming from a second-floor apartment, a news release said, and they declared a "working fire" alarm assignment. Multiple fire departments arrived on the scene, with firefighters working to put the fire out and evacuating adjoining apartments . CONROE, Texas- A 2-alarm fire at an apartment complex in Conroe destroyed 8 units late Saturday night , officials said.  According to the Conroe Fire Department , they responded to a lighting strike at Autumn Woods Apartments located in the 2000 block of Plantation Drive around 9:50 p.m.  Upon arrival, heavy fire was seen coming from a roof of an apartment building and a second alarm was requested. They were able to get the fire under control after about an hour and limit the damage to half of the apartment building.  No injuries were reported. Officials said eight units of the 16 in the building were destroyed by the fire.  The American Red Cross responded to scene to help provide shelter for the building's occupants.  The fire department is undergoing an investigation into the cause of the fire. BETTENDORF, Iowa (KWQC)- UPDATE: Bettendorf fire was dispatched to the 1800 block of Sutton Place at approximately 7 p.m. Saturday. When firefighters arrived , the fire was burning through the roof of a two story apartment complex . The Bettendorf Fire Department had the fire under control at approximately 7:55 p.m. and was extinguished at 9 p.m. while firefighters monitored hot spots overnight . All occupants of the six apartment complex were removed, none of them were injured. A firefighter sustained minor injuries . The Red Cross assisted in accommodating the residents. A man accused of setting a car on fire near St. Vincent Healthcare on Monday did it so he could return to jail, charging documents say. He had been out of custody for two and a half weeks after being arrested and charged with setting fire to his mother’s home. William Arnold Miller , 58, appeared in Yellowstone County Justice Court on Wednesday on one felony count of arson. Miller turned himself in to authorities at the Yellowstone County Sheriff ’s Office after starting the fire earlier this week and is being held on $75,000 bond. In a statement to police, Miller said he drove to the Holiday Gas Station on North 27th Street and Sixth Avenue North and filled a Powerade bottle with gasoline. He then drove west, found a dark-colored car near St. Vincent Healthcare on 12th Avenue North , poured gasoline on the windshield, lit a match and ignited the vehicle, according to charging documents. Shortly after 4 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to the area for a report of a grass fire that extended to the Westridge Apartments.  The blaze was extinguished quickly by Billings Fire Department but not before the flames charred ripped through the south side of the building. Three people were transported for minor injuries while three others were evaluated and refused transportation, according to fire officials . It's unknown how it began, but fire officials said it began outside and spread inside the fourplex. It caused $500,000 in damages.

Source: WAFB BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Firefighters responded to an electrical fire at a four- plex Friday morning in which one person had to receive treatment. The Baton Rouge Fire Department reported it happened on Sycamore Street, which is off North Foster Drive near Evangeline Street, around 6 a.m. Mark Miles with BRFD said investigators determined an electrical fire started in the attic and the flames were shooting through the roof when firemen made it to the scene. He added firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading to the other apartments. According to Miles, one patient was treated by EMS for chest pain. Aug. 22-- Torrential rains fell overnight causing historic flooding in south Kansas City and leading to water rescues and evacuations. As many as 9 inches of rain fell since Monday. Early Tuesday, firefighters rescued a woman stranded in a tree at 103rd Street and Wornall Road when Indian Creek flooded the area. That creek, which saw record flooding last month, set a new record of 28. 22 feet overnight . A family of seven were trapped on top of their roof after rushing floodwaters surrounded their home at 155th Street and Kenneth Road. The Overland Park Fire Department have been in contact via phone with the family of three adults and four children and their pets. Because they are not in immediate danger and the water levels around them are receding, crews will allow those water levels to drop to safer levels before evacuating the family. WOODBRIDGE, VA (WUSA9) - A man died after an apartment fire in Woodbridge, Virginia late Monday night , police said.  Around 11:35 p.m., officers responded to an apartment in the 3500 block of Sherbrooke Circle to assist the Department of Fire and Rescue with an apartment fire.  Upon searching the apartment, fire crews found an unconscious man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.  The victim will be transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office for further examination and identification. SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Police are investigating a shooting in the parking lot of a Syracuse apartment complex near East Brighton Avenue . The shooting was reported at 2:07 p.m. on Ivy Ridge Road , an Onondaga County 911 dispatcher said. According to police scanner reports , the victim was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds . A police officer at the scene said the male victim was conscious and breathing. More details were not immediately available. The shooting took place in a parking lot at Ivy Ridge Apartments .
