Residents escape fire at Stonebrook Apartments on Grand Rapids' NE Side

Update: Investigators suspect arson in Stonebrook Apartments fire

GRAND RAPIDS — Residents fled to safety Sunday night as firefighters were able to quickly put out a fire that caused extensive damage to an apartment on the city’s Northeast Side.

The fire department was called to the Stonebrook Apartments, off Plymouth Avenue NE between Michigan and Leonard streets, just after 10:30 pm.

Smoke was reported coming from the apartment when the first units arrived.

Apartment residents were out of the building before fire units arrived. No one was injured.

The American Red Cross was called in to help the family displaced by the blaze.

Fire officials were on the scene for several hours looking into the cause.

There’s a big demand for more affordable housing in Charlotte, where rents and home prices have shot up much faster than wages over the past few years. Many of the apartments being built now target more affluent renters, waitlists for housing vouchers are long and starter homes are snapped up almost immediately.
