Runaway Bay does the best they can to accommodate their residents. Keeping a safe environment is priority to them. Make sure you park in the right spots though or you'll quickly be towed.

We did not receive a friendly greeting from the leasing consultant (not once did she mention her name so I couldn't even tell you which one she was other than she had brown hair, brown eyes, and was pregnant). She was very dull during the entire tour and seemed like we were inconveniencing her. She showed us a 2BD that was already leased and as my boyfriend and I asked several questions and took our time looking around (as you should) she rushed us by rudely saying "well you have time to decide anyways" in an attempt to get us out the door. She spent the entire time trash talking the neighboring communities to try to make them look like the superior one, which was funny because AshBrook (excellent by the way), who is not managed by the same company, told us to check out Runaway Bay since they have somewhat similar floor plans. We took the walk back to the office building where she made us stand outside in the heat (it was in the 90s that day) to ask us her finishing questions instead of offering us to go inside in the AC to cool off. She gave us basic information and sent us on our way. I am a leasing consultant myself and I know first hand this is NO way to treat prospects whatsoever. Needless to say, Runaway Bay has been crossed off our list. more »
We toured here two years ago, but settled on Thalia Gardens instead because we couldn't decide between a nicer and large 1 bedroom with everything we need (w/d, dw) or a 2BD/2BA apartment. Now that our lease is almost up and we've decided we definitely need the 2BD/2BA, we wanted to tour again to refresh our memory. Our experience was NOT a good one.

My husband and I were looking for an apartment soon after I was offered a new job in Virginia Beach. We should have known better when they said they don't need a 'Credit Check' or proof of income to get an apartment. The area is extremely loud and all you hear is music in the parking lot, police cars rushing on Bonney Rd., fighting neighbors through the walls, or RATS. Yes, huge rats that get into your garbage and inhabit the entire complex. You HAVE to pay for Valet Trash (biggest waste of $25 a month) for someone to come and get your trash only 5 days a week and not on Friday or Saturday. THIS ATTRACTS RATS AND OTHER ANIMALS. The complex has no concern about them and will blame it elsewhere. We can hear them above us and also in the walls every night (not a cleaning issue in our apartment, but the TRASH outside). You can also smell drugs in the air almost every night as well. They will also tow your cars without notice. I had a rental car and they towed it within 4 hours and said they couldn't do anything about it even though they hire the towing company. All the visitor spaces (which they do not specify even where they are located) were either full or underwater due to the extreme flooding that happens. Again, we cannot wait to move out. If you are looking at these apartments, please look elsewhere. Front office is not helpful, the poor Maintenance guy can only do so much without being bitter, and the complex is so rundown/dirty. Do not let the facade of the pictures fool you.

I wanted to wait a few months after leaving so that my evaluation was honest and fair and not based on emotion. I do not recommend this complex to anyone who has a low tolerance for noise and trashy neighbors. When I moved in in 2008, the place had higher standards for income and credit. Over the years, I saw a marked degradation of quality and service at this property. They invested a lot of money to make the main office cosmetically appealing while neglecting the apartments of those who were long-term residents. NO upgrades at all during my time there. Maintenance crew are Band-Aid suppliers. They come in and make minor repairs to basically shut you up and but more time. My ancient AC went out at least three summers in a row. My washer and dryer were noisy pieces of crap. They don't clear sidewalks and parking lots in the winter. They don't patrol neighbors who toss their trash onto your patio or all over the grounds. They do not make people pick up after their dogs. The straw that broke the camel's back for me was when a neighbor threatened to beat me up for something and the rental office DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Nothing. They had threatened to evict me the previous year for something I didn't do, yet another person threatened my life and they were like, "you can move." So, I wiped out my savings account and moved out. So, trust me, this is not a long-term solution for housing. If you just need a place for a few months until something better comes along, please find it. The police are at the complex at least once a night. Security is practically nonexistent and if you call them, they don't come. The positives of the place are: nice lake and pool, close proximity to shopping, close to the interstate, some nice people in the rental office over the years, and polite postal carrier.

RAT INFESTATION!!!! I have seen the rats myself and its DISGUSTING. the rental office offers very little concern on the matter. When my GF spoke with them and asked if they have had this issue before they refused to answer directly.

Sara Montgomery is a staff member at Runaway Bay apartments. I needed to move out of my really bad neighborhood and away from the stress of not knowing what will happen during the day while at work. Sara had a one bedroom apartment that was available. But she rented it out. She kept me in mind and as luck would have it, another came open. She got me in right away (same day) and I took the place. Was able to move in a month later. My apartment is quieter, I feel safer, I have a patio, garbage disposal, washer and dryer, and a dishwasher! I did not have those things at all in my old place! I was thrilled. The grounds are nice. People are decent. Plus a month later she as able to send me a copy of my lease so I could open my bank account at a better bank too. Life got better for me when I took a chance on Runaway Bay Apartments in Virginia Beach, VA and I am so grateful for Sara!! Thank you so much!!

Extremely satisfied with the front office and they are always there to help. Perfect place to start out at if you are running on a budget. Everything is included in unit! (Well be…sides furniture of course) They dont force anything on you unless you have a dog! They do have a trash fee but its very convenient and one less chore out of my extremely busy day. Very nice grounds and perfect location. more »

It obviously has some i…mprovement opportunities that will definitely help with the service, for example the time that management takes for answering at request. My neighbor next door waited 4 month for the administration to put a platform for accessing the apartment easily using a wheel chair.
There has being some bug infestation in the past which I personally deal with by hiring a pest controller.
What I don't understand is, why some pet's owners don't collect their pet's waste. Is very important to understand that the place is nice because the people living on it makes it a great place and sometimes it seems like some neighbors doesn't know that.
Like I said, is a place like any others that is in need of management improvement, which deals with everyday possible situations. more »
The complex is not a bad place to live. It has long sidewalks for walking, a garbage collect service that works 95% of the time, is pet friendly and also is really quite.

Hi! I was really hoping to post a picture onto here, since I made a new friend tonight! Actually the 6th new friend in the past 3 weeks. My friend(s) are wasps of some flavor, who have come to visit my apartment! And by that, I mean inside my apartment! How sweet is that? Pretty awesome, I know! Now, I have informed the property manager, back when my wife, who is highly allergic, as well as home alone on that night as I was on duty, first met our unwelcome guests, which were 3 in the same night! Again, pretty amazing, as both me and my wife are aware. As I stated earlier, I informed the property manager, who then said that it would be taken care of... Which was really sweet of her! However, from this post you can tell, the problem still HASN'T BEEN FIXED! The management refuses to hire a company to come out and FIX THE PROBLEM! In fact, this wonderful woman let me know that them having pest control come out on their once a week visit, was in fact a courtesy, as well as making sure I can have peace of mind while I'm on duty (and not able to drive my wife to the hospital if she goes into shock) is a courtesy as well, if that isn't just the nicest thing any one has done. That being said, she refused to pay for a different exterminator to come out and fix the problem. In fact, I have yet to hear about any sort of solution from them! Isn't that nice considering my rent is $1015 and some change ( I have dogs, so it's a bit more). It's always refreshing to see the way that apartments are willing to "help" out service members and their spouses! Anyways, hopefully the office can see this, since calling has had no results, and going in person has also had... Well about the same results!
