2 Portland Teens Arrested For Attempted Murder In Hillsboro

HILLSBORO, OR — Two Portland teens were arrested over the past 24 hours on suspicion of attempted murder in Hillsboro last week, according to Hillsboro police spokesman Lt. Henry Reimann.

Cristin Octavio Magana-Ponce, 19, was arrested early Friday at his Portland residence with help from the Portland Metro Gang and Crisis Negotiation teams and Portland Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT). He was lodged at the Washington County Jail on charges of conspiracy to commit two murders.

His 17-year-old associate, whose name will not be formally released until he's officially charged with the Measure 11 crime, was arrested Thursday night in Portland.

According to police, Hillsboro officers began their investigation Aug. 12 after being called to an apartment complex at 102 S.E 11th Pl., off East Main Street and about one block from the Hillsboro Police Department, where gunfire was reportedly heard shortly before 1:30 a.m.

Officers at the scene learned there had been a teen party at the apartments before an argument broke out between two individuals, which subsequently drew in several other people — many of whom were not invited to the residence. In an effort to diffuse the situation, the host reportedly asked the uninvited party crashers to leave.

Shortly afterward, gunfire tore through the apartment, striking two 17-year-old males multiple times, police said. Both the victims, neither of whom were affiliated with either of the instigators, were taken to Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The two injured teens "were in the wrong place at the wrong time. They weren't even at the right party," Reimann told Patch on Friday, noting the argument that took place Aug. 12 was a continuation of an argument between the same two individuals that began a year or so earlier. Working with the aforementioned Portland police units, the Washington County Interagency Gang Enforcement Team (IGET) — led by a Hillsboro detective, Reimann said — located the shooting suspect in the 500-block of Northeast 127th Avenue, near Menlo Park Plaza in Portland. Recovered during Magana-Ponce's arrest was the weapon allegedly used in the shooting, police said. Magana-Ponce's arraignment date was pending at the time of this writing. Reimann said some of the involved juveniles may have gang affiliations, but the crime itself is not being considered gang related at this time. The investigation is ongoing, and this post will be updated when more information is available.
