Haunted house shut down for code problems

PHOENIX — The only boos heard at the fifth annual Vaseo Haunted House last week were from disappointed residents as the Phoenix Fire Department shut down the haunted house before it even had the chance to open.

Because the complex built walls for the haunted house, it was required to have a fire-alarm system and sprinklers, in addition to flame-retardant props, emergency lighting and proper exiting, said Brian Scholl, a Phoenix fire inspector.

Unfortunately, the haunted house, which was set to run the two weekends before Halloween at the apartment complex near Greenway Parkway and Seventh Street, didn't have the necessary safeguards to ensure the safety of its guests, he said.

The complex announced the closure on its Facebook page on Oct. 16.

Emma Lowenstein, public relations director for the Vaseo Apartment Homes, said the decision to close down the haunted house rather than make the necessary changes was difficult.

"The team spends months preparing for the event, and residents and guests are always so excited to attend so it was an extremely difficult decision to make but ultimately had no choice but to cancel the haunted house," Lowenstein said.

In the meantime, Vaseo Apartment Homes — which bills itself as the largest apartment complex in the Southwest with more than 3,000 residents — will hold a fall festival for residents on Friday, Lowenstein said.

Vaseo is not sure whether it will participate in future haunted house events, she said.

But if it does, Scholl wants to help.

"The goal is to get them up to compliance next year so they can have a haunted house for their residence," he said.

So far, Vaseo is the only haunted house that Phoenix fire inspectors have shut down this year as the result of not having a permit or the required safeguards, Scholl said.

"The haunted houses that are a smaller size won't open up until next weekend, so we'll see what happens," he said.
