Cindy Lange-Kubick: 'I was raised on the gospel of white superiority' | Local

Judy Daniell moved 17 times in her first 13 years, from trailer park to crummy apartment to trailer park in the South. Her mama always told her they were poor, but at least they weren't black. Being black was the worst thing you could be, Daniell said. That’s how her mom viewed the world. How she still views the world. In black. And white. “I didn’t know there were more than two races until I was 13 years old,” Daniell said Sunday night. Daniell didn ’t come of age during Jim Crow. She’s a child of the '80s, a mother of three living in a small Nebraska town , working in Lincoln, blogging and watching her boys get big. The 38-year-old sat down at her computer last weekend after seeing the tiki torch-bearing racists in Virginia, the largest number of neo-Nazis and white supremacists to gather in this country in a decade. Former KKK Grand Wizard David Duke was there, praising President Trump . Richard Spencer — the new face of the “alt-right” — was there. Swastika flags waved . S

Jersey City ranks one of most expensive for rent, but second best for walkability

Image
A GROWING CITY – Jersey City rents are high among major cities in the U.S. but apparently have other positive factors JERSEY CITY -- GOBankingRates, a personal finance website , published a study that ranked Jersey City as one of the most expensive cities to rent a one-bedroom apartment in the country. When compared to 50 major cities nationwide , Jersey City came in fifth, according to the study. The city is also one of the places where rents are increasing the most. However, Jersey City also rated as second best in the nation for walkability. And the study said costs for basic utilities were third lowest on the same list of 50 cities. "While Jersey City continues to grow as a destination, we have been mindful of the importance of keeping the city affordable for residents and have placed a major emphasis on creating affordable housing , including two 80/20 inclusionary projects on the waterfront," said city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill . "In four years, the Fulop adm

55 years in the making, Palma de la Reina takes flight

Image
Back in the 1960s, developer Richard Cavanaugh used to fly his airplane from Los Angeles over San Diego scouting potential properties . Flying over Rancho Santa Fe , he spotted the ideal open space , a farming area for sale along the San Dieguito River Valley . “I was looking for something for a golf course, as golf course developments were big at that time,” said Cavanaugh, who would soon get his company, Newport Pacific, in touch with a broker about the land he spied. “We put a deal together and proceeded with the design of it. The whole development was always called Whispering Palms …It only took 55 years to get everything I envisioned to happen.” The final piece of that Whispering Palms master plan drafted back in 1962 is finally in place with Palma de la Reina , a mixed-use retail, commercial and residential project on Cancha de Golf at the entrance to the Whispering Palms community of about 600 single-family homes and condominiums, and the Morgan Run Club & Resort. West Plant, greenways progressing in Alcoa | News

The detention pond at the former ALCOA Inc. West Plant is complete, as the redevelopment continues. The Alcoa Board of Commissioners got a bird’s- eye view Monday of the new detention pond , which is located in the curve where Hall Road meets Alcoa Highway , thanks to a stationary webcam the city has trained on the construction site. Five photos taken over the course of one day — Wednesday, Aug. 16 — show how the detention pond area evolved as it was prepped for seeding, explained Andrew Sonner , assistant director/chief engineer for Alcoa’s Public Works and Engineering Department. The rectangular portion shown at the bottom of the photos is the “fore bay,” he told commissioners, which is where sediment settles before clean water continues over the berms and “meanders” toward the point of exit, where it will join Culton Creek . Commissioners learned at a briefing in July that an underground spring on the property could feed a water feature on the West Plant site , and Mayor

Hurricane Harvey’s path could hit oil refineries in Texas — Quartz

Image
Hurricane Harvey is gaining steam, and is set for landfall on the coast of Texas late tonight (Aug. 25). By then it is expected to have gained the power of a category 3 hurricane, which would destroy poorly constructed houses , severely damage apartment buildings and shopping centers, and leave large areas without water and electricity for days or even weeks. But its effect on the energy industry is what many will be watching. The federally- controlled offshore waters of the Gulf of Mexico produce 17% of the US’s total crude oil output , while around half the US’s petroleum and natural gas refining capacity is situated along the gulf coast. Houston, some 30 miles (48 km) inland, is home to the country’s largest refinery and petrochemical complex . As ProPublica and the Texas Tribune reported last year, a direct hit from a big storm would cause enormous damage , not just economic but also environmental, since the complex stores huge quantities of dangerous chemicals. As well as

It’s worked for Brendan Batcheller, a senior at Fordham’s Gabelli School of Business. The public accounting major said living off campus is markedly cheaper than living within Fordham’s gates. “The cost of a year’s rent for us is less than nine months’ worth of living in a dorm,” Batcheller said in an email. “There is definitely a greater sense of independence living off campus–having to deal with a landlord, p

Young Development buys Orchard Park apartment complex

A West Seneca real estate developer was the winning bidder at the auction of a fully occupied Orchard Park apartment complex this week, offering to pay $5.65 million for the Provincetown Apartments. Young Development topped the bidding for the 71- unit apartment complex at 10-75 Provincetown Lane, which includes nine identical buildings. Including the 5 percent buyer’s premium, Young will pay $5.93 million, or $82,000 per unit. In all, 27 people presented deposits of $100,000 to register as participants, “so it was spirited bidding,” said auctioneer Cash Cunningham of Cash Realty & Auctions, which conducted the sale. The 112,536-square-foot complex, located on 9.1 acres, has 70 two-bedroom units and one four-bedroom unit. Each building has a full basement with storage units for each apartment, plus six separate garage buildings with 18 spaces in all. Once or twice a year, streets of South Korea’s busy capital freeze for several minutes at the sound of a siren, with cars stopping on roads and pedestrians moving into buildings and subway stations taking part in a nationwide drill aimed at preparing against a North Korean attack . But critics say the remarkable scenes mask aging policies that are failing to train South Koreans at a time when the threat posed by North Korea’s nuclear and missile program is growing. less In this Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2017, photo, people gather at a shelter during a civil defense drill at City Hall in Seoul, South Korea.
