Report: Florida WR James Robinson, LB Ventrell Miller cited for marijuana

It's been a tough offseason in Gainesville, and even more bad news hit the Florida football program this week. Wide receiver James Robinson and linebacker Ventrell Miller were cited with misdemeanor marijuana possession on Monday, First Coast News reported Thursday afternoon. The two players were inside their off- campus apartment early Monday morning when a residential assistant smelled marijuana and notified University of Florida police .  "Coach (Jim) McElwain is aware and it has been dealt with," a team spokesman told Thomas Goldkamp of 247Sports. Robinson, a 6-foot-4, 205- pound true freshman and former 4-star prospect from Lakeland, Florida, is expected to be a contributor in a Gator wide receiving corps that could use his length to create opportunities downfield in a passing game that has been stagnant for the better part of a decade. With star Antonio Callaway suspended for the season opener, the stage was set for Robinson to become an instant star at

The Pros and Cons of Using a Puppy Apartment for Potty Training

"Puppy apartments" have recently received rave reviews to help with a well-known challenge: potty- training puppies . It is a well-known fact that a great number of puppies are surrendered to shelters and put to sleep simply because the owners found potty -training too challenging. The so- called puppy apartment is built in such a way as to make the process easier . But do they work? As a certified dog trainer I have observed pros and cons to using a puppy apartment to train dogs. I'll discuss them both here, as well as how the method is meant to work. First, some definitions. The puppy apartment is basically a one bedroom apartment with a bathroom. If you purchase a puppy from a reputable dog breeder , the puppy will have started the potty training process . They will recognize a puppy apartment as similar to the whelping or nesting box that they were born and nursed in. Both spaces work because they rely on innate instincts, offering areas that separate soiling from

Families take up residence at Pope Francis Haven

Linda Nelson still can’t believe her new apartment is real. For six weeks, she lived with her husband, twin babies and 2-year-old son in a cramped room at the West Wynn Motel after losing housing with a roommate in late June. “Me and Linda almost killed each other a couple times,” her husband, David Parisia, joked. The family is one of 24 that have moved into Pope Francis Haven , Catholic Charities ’ latest housing project for formerly homeless families. They sat on the lawn eating pizza after a grand opening ceremony Thursday . Though their last bout of homelessness only lasted a few weeks, Nelson and Parisia have been without permanent housing for most of the eight years they’ve been together. Two years ago, they were able to get clean, stop using drugs and begin trying to find a place to live. “We found roommate after roommate,” Nelson said. The couple would stay somewhere for as long as they could, but never had a lease in their name or a place to call their own. In time, the c

EDIT: After a brief dealing face-to-face with the community manager, Bobby Scocchera, I will be contacting my lawyer, the BBB, and the Denver Housing Authority . His boss at Weidner, Shirley Tibbins (sp?) can be reached at 303-758-1739, and I suggest anyone else who's had to deal with him contact her as well. I have never been treated like this in my life, and I can't believe this man still has a job. We're counting the days until we can leave. I've lived in worse places, but not for what I'm paying to live here. Parking - There are nowhere near enough parking spots for everyone. If you don't get home before 5:30, you may frequently find yourself actually parking *outside the complex*. Interior - The carpeting is cheap and crappy. Our "brand new carpet" was stained badly before we moved in, and there's no edging around the tile areas so the carpet frays. I'm withholding harsh critique for when we move out and they inevitably try to seize our d

William Zeckendorf and the deal that brought the UN to New York

The 11th-hour deal that put the United Nations on a midtown site long covered by East River slums and slaughter-houses came in a frantic rush on Tuesday the 10th of December 1946, just the day before the General Assembly 's deadline for decision. All at once, John D. Rockefeller Jr. had offered to buy the land from developer William Zeckendorf and donate it to the UN. "If this property can be useful to you in meeting the great responsibilities entrusted to you by the people of the world," the old philanthropist told the delegates, "it will be a source of infinite satisfaction to me and my family." As it happened, the good deed would not only please the famously generous family , it would eliminate a potential rival to Rockefeller Center: Zeckendorf had announced plans to fill the site with a center of his own, with apartments, offices and a new Metropolitan Opera House . As it also happened, there was some question whether Zeckendorf had suffic

Need to Get Away? Sunrise Farm B&B in Salem Is Just the Place

Operating a bed-and-breakfast out of an 1890s- era country home in tiny Salem, SC, wasn’t exactly on Julie and Jeff Pierce’s radar in 2004. Yes, she recalls that on their honeymoon, she had mentioned to her new husband that doing so was “my dream job.” But during the nine years the Midwest natives (Ohio for her, Michigan for him) lived in Fort Myers, Fla., and ran physical therapy and yoga practices , a B&B seemed just that: an in-the-future dream. But after visiting friends in the South Carolina Upcountry and enjoying the area’s hiking trails, lakes and waterfalls, the outdoors- loving couple decided to sell their businesses and move there. “We had no deep roots in Florida,” she says, “and we thought we’d maybe build a house on Lake Keowee, get a Jet Ski.” That all changed the day they visited Sunrise Farm , a local B&B since 1991. “Jeff saw in a real estate magazine that it was for sale,” Julie says. “We came just to look at it; Jeff thought it was just a look, anyway.

Sewer line breaks in northwest Austin, spews contents 8 feet in the air

ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) — Round Rock City Council will vote Tuesday night on a new affordable housing complex . A developer wants to put a 256- unit apartment complex on about 23 acres of land, just northwest of A.W. Grimes Boulevard and East Old Settlers Boulevard. All but four of the units will be available for renters making 60 percent of the Austin Metro area median income ($77,800) which ends up being around nearly $47,000 a year. Four units will be offered to people who make 50 percent of the median income, which is $38,900. “There’s a lot of people in need. Austin obviously is going up, everybody is moving out of Austin into Pflugerville, Round Rock, so yeah we need it,” said Round Rock resident Myles Munoz . Munoz moved into an affordable housing complex off Sunrise Road in Round Rock about a month and a half ago. “We were looking around for three weeks and we were finding apartments that were basically in the $1,500 range, one bedroom,” which Munoz says isn’t affordable

Lessons learned from the Ruby Ridge standoff

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - "A federal law enforcement official called it Weaver Fever.  That's what they try to avoid - this thing where something gets so blown out of proportion that people die because you're dealing with people who won't back down," Jess Walter said. Protesters, supporters, and media from across the nation waited at the road block as information would trickle out day-by-day. Walter, a former Spokesman Review reporter , says much of the violence could have been avoided. "It's such a tragedy. You can look at these steps, Randy Weaver could have gone to court, the marshal service could have dealt with it differently," he said, "the FBI shouldn't have had those rules of engagement; you can look at those steps and see what went wrong." Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich says the same extremist violence still exists. "Case after case where we have put Neo Nazi leaning individuals in prison, one of those individ

ABC7 News: Mission Bay building back on track after massive fire

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- In Los Angeles on Monday there were large fires at buildings undergoing construction . San Francisco saw a similar large fire at an apartment complex undergoing construction back in March. The building known as MB360 block five in San Francisco was supposed to open this past August; now we're still a long way from move in day, but compared to the morning after the fire --- things are looking good. It took 150 firefighters hours to extinguish a fire that erased months of hard work. Video showed the destruction just a few days later and parts of the building getting demolished. Construction workers estimate the 172-unit complex was 80 percent complete prior to the March 11 fire. Investigators ruled it an accident, most likely the result of welding work on the top floor. Mission Bay employee Johnny Chan remembers watching the building burn. He said, "I think the progress is amazing." Monday, crews hammer nails into new wood, rebuilding every inch
