Starkweather Lofts in Plymouth see plenty of demand, quick occupancy

The first wave of residents has just begun moving into Starkweather Lofts, Plymouth's newest luxury loft-style apartment development situated between the city's historic Old Village and Hines Park.

Starkweather Lofts, a $21.1 million project,is the first major multi-family development to be built in the City of Plymouth in more than 12 years. Pent up demand for high-quality new construction in Plymouth is now being met. Over 90 percent of the units in the first phase of leasing are already occupied, according to Shelby Fulkerson Leasing Director for Starkweather Lofts. Phase II occupancy runs August 22 thru August 31 with Phase III wrapping up mid September.

The new high-end, 93-unit residential development, which consists of two, four-story buildings, is located on a lush 5.8-acre parcel with a fountain, park and pavilion along Plymouth Road near North Holbrook Street. It is adjacent to an extensive trail system that allows residents to walk, run or bike from Starkweather through Hines Park, and is within walking distance to Plymouth's historic Old Village, the City of Plymouth and Kellogg Park.

One of Plymouth's newest residents, millennial Valerie Weaver, moved into Starkweather the first weekend from Cleveland. The recent college graduate, who now works as an engineer in Metro Detroit, said she was drawn to the beauty of the project, which she first saw during its construction phase while visiting family in Plymouth.

"After living in dorms over the years, I am looking forward to living in a high-end loft with all of its amenities. Everything is new. The building is beautiful," said Weaver, noting that the attention to design detail made the lofts especially attractive to her when selecting her new home.

With eight unique floor plans to choose from, each loft features a sophisticated color palette and high-end finishes and amenities, including granite and quartz countertops, premium wood-grain plank style flooring, ceramic tiled baths, European cabinets with satin nickel hardware, stainless steel appliances, and oversized kitchen islands with seating. Other features: 10-foot-high ceilings with open ductwork, oversized energy-efficient windows and sliding glass doorwalls, plus patios or balconies depending on floor level.

Prices range from between $1,650 and $1,850 a month for 815-935 square-foot one-bedroom lofts to between $1,975 and $2,325 a month for 1,137-1,393 square-foot two-bedroom, two-bath lofts.Residents also have access to a resident park with pavilion, grilling stations, a fire pit and outdoor tables. Residents enjoy access to an urban loft-style community lounge, on-site storage units, bicycle storage, garage or covered parking, and on-site professional management by CORE Partners

Mark DeMaria, principal for DevMar Development, LLC., which partnered with Burton-Katzman, LLC., of Bingham Farms and F5 Investments of Ann Arbor on the project, said Starkweather Lofts combine the amenities found in traditional lofts or new construction condos, but because Starkweather Lofts are apartments, residents will get all of those benefits without the burden of a hefty down payment or commitment of ownership.

That's what attracted Stephanie Curry, who moved in the first week. The Toronto-native had been living in Austin, Texas for the past few years, but was feeling more than a little homesick living in the South. Her high-tech software business contracts necessitate that she live in the United States, so she decided to look for a place to live that is closer to Canada with easy access to an international airport. She soon narrowed the search to Michigan where she already has friends. Curry looked in Birmingham and Ann Arbor, but said she preferred the combination of features Starkweather offered - new construction loft apartments with high-end finishes, quick access to an international airport, a natural setting with trails, parks and a comfortable small town feel.

"I own two homes in Canada so I wasn't looking for anything with a big footprint here," she said. Curry picked the Heywood, an 845-square-foot, one-bedroom, one bathroom unit. "I'm a young empty nester so I only needed one bedroom, but I didn't want to settle for anything ordinary." Curry said the price point for Starkweather was just right. It ensures fellow residents will be professionals or empty nesters like herself, she said. Her first full day in her new loft, Curry was already making a trek to the airport, but it was to pick up her son. "I'm looking forward to exploring the trails and park with him," said Curry, who added that as a runner, the more natural setting of the interconnected park trails were very appealing to her. When she lived in Austin, she said she had to run in a bustling city where there was a great deal of traffic.Weaver also liked that Starkweather Lofts weren't on the beaten path."It's not the country here, but sitting in my loft I don't hear the noise of traffic or see the lights of the city. It's quiet and nice," Weaver said, noting it's easy for her to take a quick trip to Ann Arbor to visit college friends. "I'm still close to everything. There are restaurants and shops close by in Plymouth. It's kind of perfect here."About DevMar Development, LLC.
