Transgender North Dallas resident hopes to win the SD 8 seat Pam Curry DAVID TAFFET | Senior Staff Writer taffet@dallasvoice.com Pam Curry is one of two Democratic candidates running for the Texas Senate District 8 seat that includes Frisco, McKinney, Sachse, Plano and Richardson, as well as a small chunk of Dallas north of Forest Lane at Central Expressway. The seat is currently held by Van Taylor, a Republican who served for one term. He’s giving up the seat to make a run for Congress. Texas Sen. Don Huffines represents SD 16 , just to the south. His twin brother, Phillip Huffines , is running for the Republican nomination in SD 8. Curry has an opponent from Collin County in the Democratic primary, so just winning the primary makes this an uphill fight. “I know from the get-go, I live on the Dallas side,” she said. “It’s a long shot.” Healthcare is Curry’s primary issue. “Healthcare was crappy before the ACA, remained crappy, and unless we do something about it, it’s going to remai

Dr. Ben Carson visits New Orleans to talk housing options, funding

NEW ORLEANS — On Tuesday, Housing Secretary Dr . Ben Carson toured two mixed- income housing complexes in New Orleans and addressed concerns over budget cuts that could affect those who rely on low income- income housing . Dr. Carson got an inside look at apartments in Bienville Basin, which is the old Iberville projects, and Columbia Parc, which is the old Saint Bernard projects . Carson believes these "mixed-income" complexes are what's working in the city. Mixed-income means some people are on Section 8, while others pay full market value. Advertisement Both Bienville Basin and Columbia Parc were able to rebuild and renovate due in large part to federal assistance grants from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Local HousingNOLA representatives fear that, with potential budget cuts on the federal level, the loss of that essential funding could make it impossible to continue their efforts. Keep up with local news, weather and current events with the W

Man charged after fatal fistfight

LAKE CITY, Fla. - A man died after being punched several times, according to the Lake City Police Department . Officers responded to Windsong Apartments shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday night after receiving a report of an unresponsive person. When officers arrived, they found Christopher Roy , 39, unconscious. Police identified the suspect as Mario Brinson, 27, who was still in the apartment when officers arrived. Lake City police said Brinson tried several times to get to Roy by forcefully pushing officers aside until he was told to leave the apartment. Witnesses in the apartment told officers that Brinson and Roy had gotten into an argument, then “bowed up” at each other. Brinson then punched Roy once in the face with his fist and Roy spun around and fell face first to the kitchen floor, losing consciousness, according to police. Brinson then got back on top of Roy and struck him several more times while he was unconscious, LCPD said. The two female witnesses were unable to dial 9

Huma Abedin made $65K in the months after Hillary's loss

Image
Huma Abedin has gone high fashion and high society, with the Hillary Clinton aide enjoying a weekend in the Hamptons just days after she was featured in the September issue of 'W.' A single and ready to mingle Abedin, 41, was spotted on Sunday at the Southampton home of Moda Operandi founder Lauren Santo Domingo and her music executive husband Andres .  Lauren and Andres, whose father is billionaire Colombian business magnate Julio , were hosting their annual all- white Badminton tournament at the estate this weekend, which they scooped up for a reported $30 million. The couple split their time between that residence, an apartment in Paris and their $18.5million townhouse on Gramercy Park in New York City.  And while Abedin certainly does not have that kind of money, she still seems to be doing just fine in the wake of her boss' defeat last November, with the latest quarterly filings from the Hillary for America campaign revealing that the aide has received $64,369.94

User Interfaces for Variable Fonts

The tools we design with have a unique effect on the way we work, constraining and empowering us while we explore, examine and create. Variable fonts give us a new, wide open typographic space with which to work. Instead of prescribing value to individual UI elements in a vacuum, we should take a hybrid and calculated approach to variable font interfaces . How do we structure our design tools to adapt to the new advantages variable fonts provide us with? Article Continues Below 3 comments Despite being ahead of their time, variable font precursors—Multiple Master and GX—didn’t see widespread adoption for several reasons—one key reason being the lack of effective user interfaces that could communicate their creative utility to designers. Since their introduction, variable fonts have moved forward quickly , landing with various degrees of experimental support across major browsers. With this comes the exciting ability for fonts to responsively adapt to different layouts and contex
