Arlene Farkas’ River House apartment to be auctioned

Bigamist department store heir Bruce Farkas’ estranged wife will suffer the humiliation of a public foreclosure auction of her River House apartment — and she has her snooty coop board to thank. Arlene Farkas had defaulted on more than $6 million in mortgage payments on her E. 52nd St. unit last year — but she worked out a last-minute, face-saving, debt-retiring sale of the apartment to the French government for $7.8 million. But the coop board sniffed at the French last month. And now, the dreamy duplex is headed back to the auction block. Stein, Wiener & Roth, the law firm handling the auction, confirmed that the proceedings will now move ahead following the co- op board turndown . Farkas fought an 18-year battle to wrest control of the apartment following her divorce from her cheating ex, who got hitched to a former Alexander's employee while still married to his wife. His double life was only uncovered when the couple's kids wound up attending th

20-plus years after it closed, Trinity Meadows horse racing track to be torn down

Image
Trinity Meadows Race Track has been sitting vacant for more than 20 years, a place that has been victimized by time and vandals, a refuge to countless birds, yellowjackets and small critters. Trinity Meadows is where horses raced before Lone Star Park opened in Grand Prairie. It had previously been named Clear Fork Downs and later, Squaw Creek Downs . But now, as sprawl continues to encroach into Parker County, Trinity Meadows is about to be no more. Beginning the first week in September, the remaining 9,000-seat grandstand — a visual icon for motorists heading west on Interstate 20 — will be torn down. Cisco- based Wilks Development , owners of the property, said memories of the race track would live on as they transform in the property into a mixed-used development. “We looked at building an event center, that was originally our plan,” said Kyle Wilks, president of the company. “We looked at it in detail. But the more we dug into the economics ... it became very questionable. A

After Fox, Megyn Kelly Aims To Be a Force for Good

Image
Megyn Kelly is excited about bonding with her fellow human beings . She’s so excited she’s bouncing in her chair, hands waving, as she talks about empowerment and laughter and tears. It’s a recent summer evening , and we’re in her living room on Manhattan’s Upper West Side —a simple space of modern furniture, earth tones, and bookshelves (mostly hardcover novels, DeMille to Franzen). The apartment is quiet, uncharacteristically so, as her husband, the tech CEO turned novelist Douglas Brunt , and their children—sons Yates and Thatcher, eight and four, and six-year-old daughter Yardley—are all at the beach. Kelly, barefoot in a loose cream-colored sweater and black leggings, is telling me about her new perch at NBC and the morning show, Megyn Kelly Today , that’s set to debut later this month. Not that she can get into specifics. Occupying what used to be the 9:00 a.m. hour of the Today show, her new venture, she says, will have a live studio audience and guests of various sorts. It w

Officers were dispatched about 7:15 p.m. to the San Tropez Apartments , 8025 Russell Road, near Buffalo Drive, Lt. Peter Kisfalvi said. Inside a garage, they found the body of a woman in her early 20s next to her car, Lt. Dan McGrath said in a briefing broadcast online . It wasn’t immediately clear how she died, but detectives have deemed her death a homicide, McGrath said. The woman lived in the complex and is a “completely innocent” victim. According to a preliminary investigation, the woman had been in the complex’s office about 5:30 p.m., so detectives were trying to piece together a timeline on when she was killed, McGrath said. A person going to an adjacent garage noticed the woman’s body and called police, he said. The victim’s garage had the door open and police

Los Angeles investor group pays $50M for Waterford Lakes-area apartments

A Los Angeles- based investment group has spent roughly $94 million over the past nine months on two large apartment developments in Waterford Lakes, and is on the hunt for more in that area to boost synergies, the company's general counsel told GrowthSpotter . PRG Fund LP , which owns a portfolio of office buildings in Los Angeles County , began venturing into apartment building acquisitions within the past year. The company made its second purchase in Greater Orlando on Aug. 13, with the 364- unit Victoria Place Apartments  near Waterford Lakes Town Center for $50.13 million, or $138,000 per unit. Friends most baffling plot holes – The most confusing plot holes in Friends

Don't Miss Latest News 23 August 2017 12:00 PM Friends ran for a lot of episodes (trust us, we ranked all of them), so it's probably understandable that occasionally, across a 10-year run, a couple of minor plot holes sneaked in. But some of these gaffes are so huge, you just have to assume the respective writers of these shows had never seen another episode of the show before. We've compiled the most baffling examples, throwing in video evidence for good measure. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below 1. Is Tea Tree Oil Really All It’s Cracked up to Be?

Image
Collages by Louisiana Mei Gelpi I don’t know what to do about tea tree oil . A short month ago , I was telling anyone who would listen about this magic little miracle bottle I purchased on a whim from Walgreens. “It cures acne! And wounds! And mosquito bites! And nail fungus! And in-grown hairs! And 25 other things that I haven’t tried yet but WILL!” I was in a mania, squirting tea tree oil on my dermis with wild abandon, waiting for my glistening, smooth-chinned, fungus-free higher self to emerge from my pimpled cocoon. When I took to the internet to explore other uses, however, the infallibility of tea tree oil was thrown into question. Wait a second, where was all the evidence? I began to second-guess everything, even the results I’d experienced from using tea tree oil on my own body. I didn’t know what to believe. What’s even in this little bottle? Does it work like I think it does? Why do so many people swear by it?  I needed answers, so I got serious about finding the cold, ha

Miramar, RENTCafé, Most Expensive Apartment Markets

Survey: Broward has Florida’s 5 priciest cities for rental apartments The survey by RENTCafé ranked Miramar as the state's most expensive rental market August 19, 2017 02:00PM Aerial view of Broward County (Credit: Francisco Azola) Led by Miramar, Broward County has the five most expensive rental apartment markets in Florida, according to a survey by RENTCafé, a national apartment -search website. The average monthly rent for a Miramar apartment was $1,800 in July, a 3.2 percent increase from July 2016, RENTCafé reported. RENTCafé surveyed apartment buildings with at least 50 units. The survey excluded houses and condominiums on the rental market. Adrian Rosenberg, a spokesman for the website, told the Sun-Sentinel that Miramar rents reflect a large stock of high- end apartment buildings in the southwest Broward County suburb , where developers have opened 1,500 new apartments since 2013. RENTCafé found that the average apartment rent in Fort Lauderdale ranked second amo

a solar-powered battery for the survivalist

I am not the “prepper” type. For the past 15 years, I have lived in large cities and rarely stray into the wilderness. The idea of going too far away from mobile phone coverage , let alone a stable electricity supply , does not seem like a relaxing holiday. So when I was sent a large, high- capacity battery pack and accompanying solar panel to review, I was not quite sure what to do with it. There is clearly demand for something like the River “mobile power station”, as its Chinese manufacturer EcoFlow describes it; the company raised more than $1m in a crowdfunding campaign earlier this year and the device is now sold in big- box retailers including Home Depot , Camping World and Amazon. Competitors such as Anker’s Powerhouse and Goal Zero’s Yeti show there is a growing market for a clean alternative to petrol- powered portable generators . A couple of things finally got me plugging in the River. One was moving from San Francisco to the less foggy climes of southern California, wh
