Children Found Safe Following Springfield Standoff

SPRINGFIELD, Mo -- A man has been arrested after an early morning standoff in Springfield.

Police were sent to the 2800 block of E. University at 1:30am when callers described a man making threats with a weapon following a potential burglary.

When police arrived, the man was located inside an apartment building.

"That's when we set up a perimeter and deployed our Special Response Unit," said Lt. Tony Vienhage.

It quickly became known that the man was not alone inside, but also was with children.

"We didn't have any information that the children were harmed or unharmed," explained Lt. Vienhage. "Just not knowing that information raises the danger there."

"Their safety becomes the number 1 priority at that point, and it changes your tactics."

The man eventually surrendered and was arrested. The children were found unharmed.

Lt Vienhage says that charges will most likely be filed for burglary, robbery, and unlawful use of a weapon.
