Up to 30 displaced after two-alarm grease fire at Autumn Woods Apartments in Castleton

CASTLETON, Ind. (March 17, 2015)-- Two people had to be rescued from their third floor apartment after they got trapped inside when the building when up in flames.

It happened around 9:30 p.m. at the Autumn Woods Apartments on Woodmoss Lane, not far from Allisonville and 91st Street in the Castleton area.

When Indianapolis firefighters arrived at the scene, they heard the the residents in their mid-20s screaming for help from a third floor window, while heavy fire and smoke poured from the building. Officers called more equipment to the scene, and asked for additional manpower.

Firefighters said the two people had to retreat to their apartment after they tried to get out through the hallway only to find it was filled with smoke.

The apartment complex was evacuated. IFD says up to 30 people have been displaced. Apartment management and the American Red Cross are helping residents.

Firefighters believe the fire started when a man on the first floor of the apartment complex left grease unattended on the stove.

No one was hurt. Damages are estimated to be around $750,000.
