Coralville man broke into apartment, assaulted resident

Police say a Coralville man broke into a woman's home and assaulted her this weekend.

Saleh A. Nasr, 18, of the 200 block of Knowling Drive in Coralville, took an Uber to an apartment on Woodside Drive in Iowa City at about 4:50 a.m., according to Iowa City police complaints.

When Nasr arrived at the victim's apartment, he knocked on the front door, waking up both the victim and a roommate who partially opened the door to tell Nasr to go away, the complaints state. Police said Nasr then forced his way inside the apartment through the partially open door. Nasr was asked multiple times to leave, but refused, the complaints state.

While he was inside the apartment, Nasr shoved the victim on the bed and strangled the victim with both hands on the victim's neck, causing pain and visible marks, police said.

Nasr said he had about five beers that night, according to the complaints. Police said he was repetitive, emotional and having trouble remembering things.

Nasr has been charged with first-degree burglary, a class B felony, assault causing bodily injury and trespass, both serious misdemeanors, and public intoxication, a simple misdemeanor. If convicted on all counts he could spend over 27 years in prison.
