Lexington man accused of killing, dismembering ex-girlfriend is ruled competent to stand trial

A Lexington man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend, dismembering her and throwing her remains into a Dumpster is mentally competent to stand trial, a judge has ruled. Fayette Circuit Judge Thomas Travis issued the order Monday in the case of Patrick Ryan Jones . Jones, 25, was indicted in September in the murder of Haley Bourgeois, 20. Jones was also indicted on charges of tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse. Judge Travis heard sworn testimony on Friday from Dr. Amy Trivette, staff psychiatrist at the Kentucky Correctional Psychiatric Center in La Grange, where Jones was evaluated. After hearing the testimony, Travis ruled that Jones is able to consult with his attorneys “with a reasonable degree of rational understanding.” Travis also ruled that Jones “has a rational as well as factual understanding of the proceedings against him.” On July 21, 2016, police were dispatched to Malabu Drive after a body was found in a Dumpster behind Brookhaven Apartments, according to co

Two Marietta Men Convicted in Smyrna Apartment Murder

MARIETTA, GA — Two Marietta men convicted of murdering a woman in a Smyrna apartment have been sentenced to life without parole plus five years in confinement. After a two-week-long trial, a Cobb jury on Friday found Simeon Gashon Moore , 27, and Walter Vernell Milbourne , 31, guilty of murder, aggravated assault, burglary, armed robbery, violation of Georgia controlled substances act , and possession of a firearm during commission of a felony. Moore was also convicted of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer. On Nov. 12, 2014, the defendants and their co-defendant, Kevin Nathanial Robinson , attempted to conduct a drug transaction with Jamie Milton, 29, the boyfriend of victim Jamie Adedra Moore , 24. Robinson left his cell phone in Milton’s vehicle, and the defendants saw Milton drive back into the Mission Galleria Apartments in Smyrna. They then drove around the apartment complex until they found Milton’s vehicle, a Buick LeSabre. Milbourne and Robinson then began knoc

High Point plans to make downtown more pedestrian friendly

HIGH POINT, N.C. -- Joseph Carver has lived in High Point for the past decade. He walks to work everyday, walks to the library and walks to visit his mom in her downtown apartment. "I just like to walk," Carver said. "I've always been an active person." Carver wishes more people would do the same by getting around on foot instead of driving. "People around here are crazy when it comes to driving so you have to be really careful," he said. The city is trying to encourage more people to walk around and a federally funded transportation plan shows how it can be done. "Not everyone has a car and you need access to the train depot, the transit facility, so providing safer more accessible sidewalks, bicycle lanes, it just improves the transportation network as a whole," High Point Transportation Planning Administrator Greg Venable said. One of the top suggestions looks at Main Street around the train depot. The recommendation is to carve out bik

Greenhaven Apartments - Apartments - 6330 Havenside Dr, The Pocket-Greenhaven, Sacramento, CA - Phone Number

I am only writing this review based on the customer service I have received so far from Greenhaven apartments. My boyfriend and myself currently live in Los Angeles and are trying to relocate to the Sacramento area ASAP . It has been very hard for us to apply for apartments and put down deposits in person due to the obvious fact we live 6hours away lol. But Michelle from Greenhaven apartments has made this process so easy for us. Whenever I call the office to provide more information or receive updates I REFUSE to talk to anyone else but Michelle, she has been amazing and very patient with us. We are currently on the waitlist for Greenhaven and I hope and Pray something becomes available soon, because I would love to live in these wonderful apartments whose office provides great service. This place sucks. No soda machine. Rent is way to high, nobody uses the pool, people steal your parking spots, the laundry machine was vandalized, management is poor, landlord promises things and then

The official way to get an apartment in Stockholm

Image
Considering that Stockholm is among the five fastest growing regions in Europe, according to the City of Stockholm, it is fair to say the city's housing situation is urgent.  Housing policies dating from earlier decades established a system in Stockholm, where people only gain access to rental apartments (with capped prices) by registering in a queue, and waiting for an apartment allotted by the Stockholm Housing Agency . The intention was to make sure that everybody, not only the wealthy, could afford to live in central Stockholm . But as the city has grown in size, the queuing times have become longer. Gradually the entire rental market in the Swedish capital has gone "dark", meaning that your best chance of finding a flat is to rely on family- or professional connections. These two graphs show the numbers behind the other option for getting your flat in Stockholm, i.e. queuing up. This graph shows how quickly the waiting lines have grown for apartments in Stockhol

VoiceWaves Long Beach | Long Beach Transit’s Harassment Problem — It’s Too Common, But Who Reports It?

Image
A woman waits to board a bus along Long Beach Boulevard . Photo: Michael Lozano Story by Stephanie Perez. Speaking with the riders of the Long Beach Transit system , you will find common stories . John Muller, 23-year-old bus rider, saw a rider across from him masturbating on the bus. Tyler Joscelyn, 22, confronted two men who were harassing a girl “because she was pretty” to only end up in a physical fight. And then there’s the downright weird. Rebecca Macareno, for instance, felt unsafe during a recent afternoon bus ride from her apartment to Cerritos Mall when a man chose to sit directly next to her. “He stared at me the entire bus ride even when I looked away,” she said. “He never spoke to me or touched me, but his eyes were red, and it felt like he never blinked. He could have sat anywhere on the bus, but he sat by me.” City locals, including high school and college students, rely heavily on public transportation to get around each year but many also feel uneasy and unsafe, es

Auburn University's first black student: 'Happened to be at the right place at the right time'

SYLACAUGA, Alabama – Harold Franklin never set out to attend Auburn University . The school with its agricultural heritage had little appeal for the bookish Franklin. “I used to hate when daddy grew a garden and I had to go out and help with it,” Franklin said. "That was the last place I wanted to go.” He had dreamed of being an attorney, inspired by his childhood idol Thurgood Marshall , the prominent counsel for National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and first black Supreme Court justice . “I wanted to be a lawyer,” Franklin said, sitting on the couch in his two-bedroom apartment in Sylacauga below a framed photo of Samford Hall. “That was the most important thing to me.” Franklin graduated from Alabama State University , then named Alabama State College , in 1962 with a degree in government and psychology. Franklin was seeking character references for a law school application when an encounter with civil rights attorney Fred Gray put him on the track to b

Boom times for the pretty city with the lake

Image
INDIGENOUS Australians living in the beautiful stretch of NSW coastline we now know as Lake Macquarie called the lake for thousands of years by the name Awaba, which is said to translate to “a plain surface”. The lake is often just that, a plain blue surface of sparkling water surrounded by small and large communities and stretches of bush. The first European contact with the Lake Macquarie area was in 1800, when a man named Captain William Reid took a wrong turn on his way from Sydney to Newcastle and found himself in a lake rather than the river he had been expecting further north. It is said that the trip was to retrieve a load of coal. Instead his wrong turn gave the Lake Macquarie area a new name between 1800 and 1826, as Indigenous names in NSW were swept aside in the push for European settlement. The land of the Awabakal nation became known as Reid’s Mistake, until a colony that wanted to acknowledge Governor Macquarie named the area after him instead. For a long time L

What is a near miss and how common are they aviation planes

Image
P ilots dislike the term “near-miss”. It’s a phrase that conjures in laymen minds two planes, inches apart, averting catastrophic disaster by a matter of seconds. Perhaps one aircraft’s wing scrapes the undercarriage of another, sending sparks flying . Enter “near miss” into a search engine and the results in the news section would have you believe that planes are regularly dodging each other in a sky filled with chaos. The reality is much drier. “We don’t use the term near-miss,” explains Martin Rolfe , chief executive officer of NATS, in charge of air traffic control in the UK. This is fine Credit: © Roger Bamber / Alamy/Roger Bamber / Alamy “We call it a loss of separation. Broadly speaking, that is when two aircraft have gotten closer together than they should have done. And that doesn’t mean it is hugely dangerous.” Loss of separation is certainly less sexy than near-miss - but what should the separation be? How far apart should planes fly? The separation protocols are govern

Man convicted in 2014 homicide | News

A Baltimore man faces a mandatory life prison sentence after being convicted Wednesday for taking part in the robbery and slaying of a Blairsville man three years ago. A jury convicted Deandre Jones Jr ., 32, of second-degree murder, robbery and conspiracy to robbery following two days of testimony in Indiana County Common Pleas Court . Jones was one of four suspects accused of planning to rob and kill Tyron Howard , 37, in his apartment at 122 S. Stewart St. Two of Jones’ co- defendants reached plea agreements with the district attorney ’s office and a third was convicted following a trial in June. State police charged that the group traveled from Altoona to Blairsville on the night of Sept. 29, 2014, and the purported leader of the plot, Michael Eades, told the others he intended to collect money Howard owed him from drug trafficking. Witnesses portrayed Howard and Eades as best friends for years. Howard was the best man at Eades’ wedding, and Eades named one of his children
