Those interested in professional development within the industry can choose from many class offerings at HAA.

On Monday I posted about the opportunities within the apartment industry and the job postings on the Houston Apartment Association’s (HAA) website. There are many positions available through the HAA alone, so if you’re thinking about a career in this area, I’d jump over to that site and look around. According to HAA Executive Vice President, Jeff Hall, The Greater Houston apartment industry provides jobs to more than 35,000 professionals. He says specialized education is not necessary for many entry-level positions in the apartment industry, but many resources are available for jobseekers in Houston through HAA. Some of them include:

1. A Leasing 101 classoffered through the Houston Apartment Association. Attendees will learn the basics of property management, fair housing compliance and about industry terminology. The class is $65 if pre-paid, $50 if taken online. You can find more about class dates and times and how to register here http://www.haaonline.org/program.aspx?ID=206.

2. A Property Management Program. Working in conjunction with HAA members and staff, Houston Community College has established a property management program which covers Multifamily Property Management, Property Management Software, Landlord/Tenant Law and Leadership Skills with Hands-on Internship Experience. The 144-hour program costs $995 but the Houston Apartment Foundation offers six annual scholarships which cover the entire tuition for individuals not presently employed in the property management industry. More information about the program can be found here http://www.haaonline.org/Display.aspx?id=207)

3. Career Open House. On the evening of February 24, 2011, HAA will host a community career open house for prospective apartment industry employees featuring industry speakers and networking opportunities.
