Fire damages unoccupied Royal Crest apartment in Marlborough - News - MetroWest Daily News, Framingham, MA

MARLBOROUGH – Firefighters quickly put out a blaze inside an unoccupied residence at the Royal Crest apartments Tuesday afternoon, mostly limiting the damage to that one apartment, said Fire Chief Kevin Breen.

A resident of the apartment complex called 911 after seeing smoke emanating from a third-floor balcony of one of the residential buildings at the facility around 12:45 p.m., said Breen.

Fire crews arrived moments later and encountered heavy smoke and fire. Firefighters immediately began an aggressive outside attack on the blaze and were able to quickly put it out, said Breen.

The apartment was empty, which aided crews in containing the fire to the apartment. Breen said if there had been furniture and other materials in the apartment, the fire could have spread and the damage could have been much worse.

“The fire was just ready to break from the area of origin,” said Breen. “We were very fortunate.”

The apartment sustained significant fire damage. Two other apartments had water and smoke damage, said the chief.

No injuries were reported, said Breen.

The chief said residents of the apartment building would be allowed back in on a case-by-case basis depending on smoke and water damage to their apartments. The Red Cross was on scene Tuesday assisting residents.

Fire officials are investigating what sparked the blaze. Breen said employees of the complex had been working in the apartment recently, but he was unsure what type of work they were doing.

Luis Tavares, who lives on the first floor of the building, heard the fire alarm and immediately ran to the third floor to alert residents. He said there was heavy smoke on the third floor so he ran back downstairs to get his wife and young son.

“We got a little bit nervous,” he said.

City Councilor Donald Landers, who lives in the area, was driving by when he saw smoke and flames coming from the apartment building. Landers praised the firefighters for a job well done.

“They got a good stop on it,” he said. “I was riding by and saw smoke and flames and then all the sudden there was nothing. It was amazing.”
