TBT: Fitzroy tear Kangaroos apart

TBT: 1983 Fitzroy vs North MelbourneThis weeks throw back is from round 13 in 1983 where Fitzroy recorded a 150 point win over North Melbourne.

150 points.

It was a match to remember for the Fitzroy Lions back in Round 13, 1983, when they took on the first-placed North Melbourne Kangaroos in front of 19,770 fans at Junction Oval.

A half time lead of 35 points ballooned out in the second half, as the Roys piled on 11 goals to two in the third term, and held North goalless in the last quarter while adding another 12 goals.

The final score was an incredible 34.16.220 to 10.10.70.

Matt Rendall, who had not kicked a goal in his previous seventeen games for Fitzroy, kicked eight goals, while Bernie Quinlan and Michael Conlan added seven each. Gary Wilson rounded out the big victory with four goals. Les Parish racked up 39 disposals.

Amazingly, the Kangaroos would recover from the shellacking and claim the minor premiership in 1983, but the defeat was the largest ever suffered by a minor premier. At the time, the defeat also more than doubled the previous biggest loss by a minor premier.
