Accidental round fired through floor critically wounds housesitter below

A woman who was housesitting in Oceanside suffered a critical gunshot wound Tuesday night when an upstairs tenant accidentally fired a round through his floor as he was starting to clean his gun.

The man raced to her aid before police and medics got there. Paramedics took her to a hospital with a life-threatening wound, police spokesman Tom Bussey said.

The 63-year-old woman, from Huntington Beach, was staying at her daughter’s apartment on Bush Street about a block east of Interstate 5.

Shortly before 11 p.m., a tenant in the apartment above her sat down to clean his 9mm Glock pistol and accidentally fired a round that was in the chamber, Bussey said. The round went through his floor and hit the victim while she was sitting on the couch, watching TV.

The bullet hit her leg. By the time medics got her into an ambulance, she was unconscious and barely breathing, Bussey said.

The 25-year-old gun owner was interviewed but not arrested because the shooting appeared accidental, Bussey said.
