Murder suspect in Auburn apartment shooting surrenders to police

Demetrious Andre Newell Jr.

A Chambers County man surrendered himself to authorities Wednesday for a murder charge stemming from a fatal shooting that occurred behind an Auburn apartment complex earlier this week.

Auburn police said 25-year-old Demetrious Andre Newell Jr., 25, fatally shot 28-year-old Anthony Jamal Davis, of Auburn, behind the complex located in the 500 block of Foster Street on Sunday at 9:45 p.m. Officers found the unresponsive victim lying in a grassy area. Medical personnel tried to give the victim treatment, but Davis was pronounced dead at 11:10 p.m.

Newell developed as a suspect during the investigation and a warrant was issued for his arrest. Police believe Newell shot Davis after an altercation occurred between the two men. After Newell surrendered to police at the Auburn Police Division, he was transported to Lee County Jail on a $150,000 bond.
