“The apartment is light all year round,” Mrs Sutcliffe said. “There are no dark rooms and every room opens to the balcony.”

Mrs Sutcliffe said the apartment feels more like a house because of the wide wrap around terrace that is divided into three zones — balcony, courtyard and covered entertaining.

At one stage, a swing and slide were out there for daughter Sophie, aged three, to play on.

“It’s perfectly child friendly and there’s room for a rooftop garden,” Mrs Sutcliffe said.

“We put the swing and slide under the pergola so it could be used in the rain or the sun.”

A two-car garage in the basement comes with a large separate storage room.

The Sutcliffes have repainted the apartment and added plantation shutters and airconditioning.

There’s a big demand for more affordable housing in Charlotte, where rents and home prices have shot up much faster than wages over the past few years.
